Fundraiser allows donors to jump off San Clemente Pier

There’s typically only three ways to jump the San Clemente Pier – be a lifeguard, join the summer junior lifeguard program, or do it illegally and risk a big fine.

But there’s another loophole this weekend for people to get the thrill of plunging from the wooden planks, with a fundraiser that will let donors jump off of the famed pier at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 19.

It will cost a $1,000 donation, with proceeds going to the PierPride Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to keeping the pier pristine for visitors and residents. The annual fundraiser is now in its ninth year.

The goal is to raise at least $12,000 for various projects, with the foundation eyeing LA28 Olympics and the visitors who will be coming to town, especially for the surfing competition happening just south of San Clemente at Lower Trestles.

“The summer Olympics is going to bring large crowds down to Trestles, we’ll have so many different events, there will be a lot of people staying between Oceanside up to the Honda Center,” said Nicole Lindstrom, marketing director for Pier Pride. “We really want to keep the pride of San Clemente, with the pier being the gem that it is.”

Each year, an estimated 2 million people stroll along the wooden pier.

The Olympics in 2028 coincide with the pier turning 100 years old, and the hope is to transform the entrance back to how the town’s founder, Ole Hanson, envisioned it, a community gathering space at the base of the pier.

“There was no blockage by landscaping, you could look out at the pier and it was a welcoming area where people could sit, it was a place for the community,” Lindstrom said. “We have that now, but between the train stop and everything else, there’s not enough room for people to gather.”

The project would expand the trolley loading space, add bench seating, improve coastal landscaping and add public art to encourage use of the railroad underpass.

Another big project on the horizon is the pier railing replacement, with hopes to add a more environmentally friendly composite railing later this year, similar to Cayucos Pier on the Central Coast.

PierPride started as a way to fill the gap after city funding that helped care for the structure was affected when the state ended redevelopment programs. The city still spends an average of $425,000 a year on maintenance.

The pier was built in 1928. Since the very beginning, it has also been a train stop, first from the Santa Fe Railroad and today for Metrolink and Amtrak. An underpass lets train visitors get to the waterfront.

The wooden, 1,200-foot-long pier has a storied past, including being used by rum smugglers who traveled from Mexico and Canada, waiting in the dark of night before making their way to a trap door beneath the deck where they could offload the illegal booty.

Storms twice battered the pier to pieces, once in the late ’30s and again in the ’80s.

PierPride hosts several other fundraisers throughout the year, including a dinner at Fisherman’s Restaurant at the base of the pier and coastal tours aboard Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching boats, which launched from the San Clemente Pier decades ago before moving to the harbor.

In recent years, signs about local wildlife and the Dana Point Headlands have been added, vibrant art has spruced up the restroom building and netting was added to keep birds from gathering and pooping into the water. Disposals for fishing lines and hooks were added and bike racks installed at the base of the pier.

The pier jump is “a chance for people to do something they’ve always wanted to do, legally and safely,” Lindstrom said. Some businesses have sponsored people to do the plunge, while others sign up as individuals.

Lifeguards will be on hand to teach people how to jump safely and to give help back to shore if needed.
