Paul Gascoigne has revealed he faked an injury during England’s run to the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup.
The Three Lions hero’s stunt was all part of a prank aimed at manager Sir Bobby Robson.
Gascoigne recalls leaving the national team boss furious after one interaction in between matches.
The former midfielder scored twice in six appearances at the tournament, which turned out to be the only World Cup of his career.
Having been handed his international debut by Robson two years earlier, Gascoigne emerged as a key man for the Three Lions in Italy.
He played every minute up until their semi-final defeat against Germany.
Gascoigne missed the third-place play-off against the host nation due to suspension following a booking against the eventual champions.
The caution produced the iconic scenes Gascoigne breaking down in tears at the prospect of missing the final.

Recalling his experience, Gascoigne told White & Jordan: “I had the best time of my life.
“I trained every day with the guys playing in the World Cup and our fans were fantastic and I had such a laugh there.
“I was playing table tennis every day, playing tennis every day.

“And I remember one time I was bored and Bryan Robson got injured, he did his Achilles or whatever.
“So I remember going into the toilet and coming out near the swimming pool with a bandage, toilet roll around my head around my arm and walking in front of Bobby Robson.
“He went off it, he went, ‘I can’t believe it. I’ve lost my captain and look what’s happened to you now.’
“I went, ‘I slipped in the swimming pool,’ and he absolutely hated us and all the lads were laughing and I just took the bandage off.
“I went, ”I’m only joking gaffer,’ [Robson replied], ‘Oi, come back here now, you,’ he was after us.”
Gascoigne scored twice as England made the semi-finals at his one and only World CupGettyGascoigne would win a total of 57 caps for England during his career, scoring ten goals.
Of those appearances, 17 came under Robson, who handed him his debut in 1988 against Denmark aged 21.
The legendary manager left his role as Three Lions boss following Italia 90 after eight years in charge.
