Reports suggest that Royal Challengers Bangalore had targeted Shubman Gill at some point in the past to replace Virat Kohli as the 'Brand' of the franchise in the Indian Premier League.
Ever since the IPL's inception in 2008, the Royal Challengers Bangalore have consistently relied on their most seasoned batter, Virat Kohli. Kohli, though, could not perform very well in the first few seasons but was backed by the RCB franchise.
However, once Kohli hit form, there was no force stopping him as he went on to be the greatest ever cricketer to have played for a single franchise throughout his career. He also amassed 8000+ runs in IPL history.
Recently, Rohit Juglan had reported that before the IPL mega-auction in 2024, the franchise RCB was linked with the Gujarat Titans. The Titans were then confused between handing the priority to veteran spinner Rashid Khan or Captain Shubman Gill.
Despite having taken the Captaincy in IPL 2024, after Hardik Pandya departed from the franchise, Gill, who was considered the poster boy of the Titans, was thrown under major uncertainty by the franchise's over-preference for spinner Rashid Khan. They were also eyeing giving the first retention spot to the Afghanistan captain.
Just then, RCB were in the hunt for their next skipper after Virat Kohli had turned down the offer to take up any such role. They also needed a player who could back Kohli to emerge as the next face of the franchise once Kohli departs, ending his decades of legacy in the IPL.
"Gill has already been established as one of the biggest brands of Indian cricket. We are all aware that after Virat Kohli, the player who could be the biggest brand of Indian cricket, their poster boy, it would be Captain Shubman Gill," said Rohit Juglan on his YouTube channel.
"Just like the broadcasters as well as the MRF had cashed in on Gill, RCB too wanted to cash in on this opportunity to acquire a player who could emerge as their next big thing. At that time, there was only one name, Shubman Gill," reported Juglan.
Shubman Gill is India's most successful cricketer in WTC History
Recently, Shubman Gill created a new WTC record of having scored the most centuries for India since the start of the ICC World Test Championship in 2019. He surpassed former Captain Rohit Sharma in the tally with 10 hundreds to his name.
He also surpassed Virat Kohli to reach 5 centuries as India's Test captain in no time, only behind the likes of the great Sunil Gavaskar. He also has more centuries than Rahul Dravid as the Indian Test skipper and has equalled his tally with legends like Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni.
Currently, he sits second on the list of run-getters from Asia in the WTC history. With Pakistan's Babar Azam the first to go past 3000 runs, Shubman is second on the list with 2826 runs to his name.
Shubman Gill to replace Virat Kohli in the Fab4 - Predicts Former Cricketer
Former cricketer Aakash Chopra, in a recent viral video, opined on the new Fab4 from among the current youngsters of World cricket. He picked two Indian cricketers in the list, Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal.
While he showed faith in Yashasvi Jaiswal's calibre despite the batter not featuring across all three formats of the game currently, he ascertained that Gill is a constant on the list, as he is expected to be the 'Next Big Thing' of Indian cricket, which he right now partially is.
