Blackhawks 3, Bruins 4 (OT) — Three Stars, Key Takeaways

The Blackhawks started the game fast again, but this time they were getting shots on net. Chicago was credited with the first four shots on net in the game. Unfortunately, the second Bruins’ shot went in just under four minutes into the game. Matt Grzelcyk tried to play with the puck in front of the net and ended up kicking it perfectly to Casey Mittelstadt all alone on the doorstep for a tap-in. Thankfully, Connor Bedard scored his first goal of the season in the second game of the season — mirroring his rookie year — to tie the game. That’s where the score stayed thru the end of 20 minutes.

At 2:22 into the second period (almost a Pat Foley special), Louis Crevier appeared banked a shot into the net off a Bruins defender to give the Blackhawks the lead. Tanner Jeannot tied the game just over nine minutes into the second period. Things got a little scary in the final 72 seconds of the second period when the Blackhawks gave Boston almost a full 5-on-3 power play, but they were able to finish the second period tied at two.

The 5-on-3 carried over to the start of the second period and Boston was able to take the lead only 15 seconds into the third period. There could have been a couple more Boston goals if not for a few enormous saves from Arvid Söderblom. André Burakovsky scored a nice game-tying goal early in the third. The Blackhawks had to kill a penalty inside the final three minutes to force overtime and get a point in the standings.

Frank Nazar and Bedard had a few glorious chances in the first minute of overtime but Joonas Korpisalo made three ridiculous saves. Bedard’s buddy Fraser Minten finished the game for the Bruins with a snipe.

    Star 1: Connor Bedard

Bedard scored his first of the year at 8:19 into the first period. Colton Dach absorbed a big hit behind the net from former Blackhawk Nikita Zadorov and clear the puck to Burakovsky, who found Bedard for the absolute missile of a shot. He added an assist on Crevier’s goal in the second period.

    Star 2: Arvid Söderblom

Another night, another strong performance between the pipes for the Blackhawks. In regulation, Söderblom stopped 28 of 31 (.903 save pct). But the saves he made were huge at the right times, including this one with the game tied late in the third period. He was terrific.

    Star 3: André Burakovsky

After the Blackhawks’ second line was the offense driver for the Blackhawks in the first game, two members of the top line made big contributions tonight. Burakovsky had an assist on Bedard’s goal to open the scoring for Chicago and then scored the game-tying goal early in the third. If he can find a groove with Bedard on the top line, the Blackhawks’ offense will have another dimension and be even more dangerous. Both players had two-point nights.

    Key Takeaways

The Blackhawks made a last-minute roster adjustment, inserting Crevier for Sam Lafferty. Nice call! Here’s Crevier’s goal from early in the second period.

    — BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) October 10, 2025 Even with seven dressed defensemen, Wyatt Kaiser skated 9:01 in the first period — the most ice time on the team and almost three full minutes more than any other defenseman on the roster (Connor Murphy skated 6:08). Kaiser was up to 14:26 by the end of the second period, still more than two full minutes more than Murphy (12:09), who remained second on the Blackhawks’ blue line. All 11 dressed forwards took at least one draw in the opening two periods. The Blackhawks won 18 of 41 faceoffs as a team thru 40 minutes. Jason Dickinson and Nick Foligno won 4 of 7 each while Nazar won 3 of 7. Bedard lost all three of his faceoffs in the first period (some in the comments will write off his entire impact on the period). The rest of the Blackhawks won 11 of 19 in the first period; the teams were 50-50 on 22 total draws in the opening 20 minutes. Dickinson left the bench and didn’t take a shift in the final 4:06 of the second period. With Dickinson not available, Ryan Greene went to the box for cross-checking and Foligno immediately joined him in the box for an illegal faceoff. So probably the Blackhawks’ top three faceoff options in a penalty kill situation weren’t available on the ice. Not ideal. The Blackhawks announced Dickinson would not return for the third period, which isn’t ideal at all. On a Blackhawks power play in the middle of the third period, Zadorov absolutely hammered Rinzel into the boards. Rinzel spun and put himself in a dangerous position; Zadorov was hitting everything he could touch the entire night and got all of Rinzel. Rinzel went straight to the room after struggling to get back to his feet. Thankfully he returned to the ice.

    — BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) October 10, 2025 Grzelcyk was on the ice for each of the first four goals of the game (two for each side). He took the fifth goal of the night off and was back on for the Blackhawks’ tying goal. Dach had a nice night overall. Six hits, two shots on net, one assist and one takeaway in 13:22. The Blackhawks killed 4-of-5 penalties in regulation, but their power play was 0-for-3. Artyom Levshunov is thinking way too much. Either simplify things or give the responsibility to someone else. He looked lost quarterbacking the second power play and got caught between opponents multiple times. Levhsunov needs to play with his elite instincts and physical ability and not think himself into mistakes. He got better in the third period, but they have to find a way to turn his brain off earlier in games. For Boston, Hampus Lindholm skated 4:26 in the first period and did not return for the second. His last shift ended with 8:04 remaining in the opening period.
