City proposes indoor concert venue as part of Bank of America Stadium renovation project

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Charlotte's taken another step toward making itself a top tourism destination.

The city says Tepper Sports and Entertainment, which owns the Panthers and Charlotte FC, plans to build a 4,400-seat indoor music venue adjacent to Bank of America Stadium, hosting 80 to 100 shows annually.

TSE has told city officials that no public money will be used to build the venue.

The council will vote this month on moving forward with the next steps of the plan.

The music venue comes as part of a larger agreement between Charlotte and TSE to renovate Bank of America Stadium.

The city is investing $650 million in that project from a fund that is legally required to be used for hospitality and tourism.

TSE will be at least matching that total, according to city officials, and in return for the city's contribution, TSE has committed the Panthers to play at BofA for the next 20 years.

City council members on Monday expressed gratitude for Tepper and his investment in Charlotte.

"I envision a vitality in this whole area and the fact that TSE has the potential for additional investment because of Mr. Tepper's resources, so I regard that as a very exciting prospect," said Council Member Edmund Driggs.

Steve Bagwell, the CEO of the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority, said in a statement, “We are grateful to Tepper Sports & Entertainment for bringing this new music and entertainment venue to life beside Bank of America Stadium. This addition brings even more energy to Charlotte’s convention and entertainment districts, creating another asset that draws visitors, generates economic impact, and strengthens our city’s reputation. With its location within walking distance of the Convention Center and surrounding hotels, this will be a powerful draw for convention attendees, leisure travelers, and music fans alike — fueling growth for our visitor economy and enriching the experiences that keep people coming back.”

The NFL will also have to approve the agreements.
