Bold Blackhawks Predictions for the 2025-26 Season

The preseason is in the books and we can now, officially, turn out attention to the 2025-26 regular season for the Chicago Blackhawks. Which means it’s time for some bold predictions!

The last few years, my first prediction has been focused on how much offense the Blackhawks would get from new additions to the roster. This year, the only forwards brought in are André Burakovsky and Sam Lafferty. While I could certainly weigh in on their individual additions to the roster, that feels kinda weak.

So I’m going off the board to start.

    Blackhawks Prediction 1

My Prediction: the Chicago Blackhawks will have a top-five power play in the NHL.

Last year, the Blackhawks actually finished seventh in the NHL on the power play (24.9 percent). The Tampa Bay Lightning finished fifth in the league (25.9 percent), with the top four in the league — Winnipeg, Vegas, New Jersey and Detroit — all over 27 percent.

With the additions of Sam Rinzel and Frank Nazar top the top unit for a full NHL season, and additional experience under the belt of Connor Bedard, they should be better this season.

    Blackhawks Prediction(s) 2

Last year I took a run at how many NHL games the young Blackhawks would play in the regular season. We have a few established players now — Nazar, Wyatt Kaiser, Landon Slaggert — and we’re assuming Rinzel will be in the lineup all season. But what about the rest of the young players?

    Let’s start with the defensemen:

    Artyom Levshunov — 68 Ethan Del Mastro — 55 Kevin Korchinski — 28 Nolan Allan — 42 Louis Crevier — 30

These are some bigger numbers than I have predicted in the past, but the fact that the Blackhawks are turning the blue line over to the youngsters opens the door for lots of guys to get some opportunities at the NHL level. I think Levshunov gets the majority of the season on the right side and quarterbacking the second power play unit. Even with the Blackhawks signing Matt Grzelcyk on Sunday, Del Mastro and Allan should see more consistent ice time when they’re with the NHL club. Crevier likely gets some run if/when Levshunov needs a reset and if Connor Murphy isn’t in Chicago after the trade deadline.

    What about the forwards?

    Oliver Moore — 45 Ryan Greene — 30 Nick Lardis — 15 Samuel Savoie — 12 Sacha Boisvert — 4

I think Moore and Greene will get some time in Rockford to work on their games before coming up, and might make a trip back if needed (and possible because of the Blackhawks’ depth). But, after the trade deadline, they’re both probably up for good. And the trade deadline might open up opportunities for Lardis and Savoie as well.

Yes, I’m including Boisvert here — but not Anton Frondell. With Frondell playing in the SHL, whether or not he comes over depends on when his season ends, his health and the Blackhawks’ situation at the time. I think Boisvert will follow the recent path of guys like Nazar, Slaggert, Moore and Greene and sign after BU’s season ends (in the Frozen Four again?).

    Blackhawks Prediction 3

My prediction: Sam Rinzel wins the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s rookie of the year.

Yeah, I’m going there. If my first prediction comes true, Rinzel will be a rookie running a top-five power play unit. With the firepower the Blackhawks have on that unit, he could pile up points. Montreal’s Lane Hutson won the award last year with 66 points — 26 of which came on the power play.

There will be tough competition from the likes of forwards Ivan Demidov (Montreal) and Ryan Leonard (Washington) and defensemen Alexander Nikishin (Carolina), Zeev Buium (Minnesota) and Zayne Parekh (Calgary). But Rinzel helping the Blackhawks’ power play as much as he could — and benefitting from the growth of Bedard and Nazar on that top unit — might put enough points on the board to get the attention of voters.

    Blackhawks Prediction(s) 4

With the Blackhawks have a significant number of veterans in the final years of their respective contracts, there might be a final fire sale at the trade deadline from general manager Kyle Davidson. Here’s where I believe the Blackhawks players in walk years will finish their respective seasons:

Jason Dickinson — Florida Panthers Connor Murphy — Columbus Blue Jackets Ilya Mikheyev — Los Angeles Kings Sam Lafferty — Edmonton Oilers Nick Foligno — Chicago Blackhawks

With Aleksander Barkov out for the entire season for the Panthers, they’ll not only need help down the middle, but also another strong defensive center. Thanks to Barkov being out long-term, they’ll have enough cap space to make an interesting move. Dickinson is the perfect kind of center for their team identity. I’ll hurt if/when he goes, but Florida makes a ton of sense.

Murphy is the longest-tenured skater in Chicago, and the Blackhawks will do right by him if they move him. He spends his offseasons in Columbus, and the Blue Jackets might be pushing for a playoff berth by the time the trade deadline comes around. Adding a strong, veteran defenseman makes sense for them as well.

With Anze Kopitar in his final season, the Kings want to win for him. And they’ll need to get past the Oilers to do it. Mikheyev is a good defensive player with elite speed — two things the Kings will need to beat Edmonton.

Lafferty is an affordable, defense-first forward who could improve Edmonton’s penalty kill and fourth line.

And I think Foligno stays put as the captain of the Blackhawks, even thru the final year of his deal.

    Blackhawks Prediction(s) 5

Yes, it’s time for the annual “what will Bedard do?” prediction. But I’m going to throw in a bonus pick — Nazar’s production in his first full NHL season.

    Connor BedardGoals: 32Assists: 55Points: 87 Frank NazarGoals: 28Assists: 39Points: 67 (yeah, I went there…)

Remember to bookmark this one and check back when the season ends when I come back to these and see how well (or poorly) my predictions turned out!
