It isn’t often that former Alabama coach Nick Saban is wrong about anything related to college football, but when he is it tends to be in spectacular fashion.
In his first year of retirement from the Crimson Tide in 2024, Saban infamously uttered this phrase on The Pat McAfee Show…
“The only place you play in the SEC that’s not hard to play in is Vanderbilt. When you play at Vanderbilt, you have more fans there than they have.”– Nick Saban on @PatMcAfeeShow pic.twitter.com/4V0LkKf35c
— Billy Derrick (@billyderrick10) September 20, 2024That, of course, backfired on Saban in a huge way when the Commodores shocked then-No. 1 Alabama 40-35 in Nashville – leaving the former Alabama coaching legend with plenty of egg on his face, including Vandy playing his quote on its videoboard seconds after the upset victory.

— Brandon Marcello (@bmarcello) October 6, 2024A year later, Saban was on the ESPN College GameDay set in Tuscaloosa hours before No. 10 Alabama faces No. 16 Vanderbilt (3:30 pm ET, ABC) and offered his best mea culpa.
“I want [to give] a public apology for saying that,” Saban said with a laugh while on set on The Quad in Tuscaloosa.

— Mike Rodak (@mikerodak) October 4, 2025Saban wasn’t completely wrong about playing the Commodores in Nashville, as Alabama is 29-14-2 all-time against Vandy on the road. Alabama’s record against Vandy at home is even better, as the Tide sports a 32-5-2 record against the Commodores when they are the visiting team.
Saturday’s game is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
