How does crime in Charlotte compare to cities where the National Guard has been deployed?

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- Renewed calls for safety on the light rail had several stops swarming with security officers Friday night. The changes come after the deadly Aug. 22 stabbing of Iryna Zarutska, and the push for public safety reform that followed.

Charlotte Area Transit System officials say armed officers from Professional Security Services will use bikes and utility vehicles to patrol the Blue Line.

"These are not things that we promised," said Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles. "These are the things that we are doing. These steps are in motion."

Authorities want to add more security by giving overtime to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers. Riders complained that ticket enforcement was nonexistent. Officials from CATS and the city say riders can expect security officers to make sure tickets are checked.

"I want to be clear that I hear often that from our neighbors, our residents, the people that live in this great city, who just want to feel safe," Lyles said during a morning news conference about new safety measures.

The president of the Char-Meck Fraternal Order of Police on Friday called for city leaders to request deployment of National Guard soldiers in the Queen City.

He says it would "address the severe staffing crisis within CMPD, which we believe has led to the violent crisis in Charlotte"

However, FBI statistics show that not only has violent crime dropped 7.4% across the country from over the last year, it's also declined in Charlotte from 2024 to Sept. 15, 2025.

This graph from the FBI Crime Data Explorer details cities the Trump Administration has called for the National Guard to deploy to. The statistics rang from 2024 to Sept. 15, 2025, detailing violent crime. Query 1: Charlotte, Query 2: Portland. Query 3: Chicago, Query 4: DC, Query 5: Memphis

Despite that, President Donald Trump has called for the National Guard to help curb crime in major cities like Portland; Chicago; Washington, D.C.; Baltimore; and Memphis. But the FBI reports crime had already decreased in those cities before the guard arrived.

Diego Pagan says he rides the Blue Line frequently and ultimately feels comfortable being around the area; however, he's not quite on board with the National Guard coming to town.

"I think it just not necessary at all. I've been here for a while now, it's a very safe place. One isolated event just doesn't turn it an unsafe area," he said.

It is unclear when the new measure will be implemented.
