ROMULUS, N.Y. – The state DEC issued a cease and desist letter to a local business owner found to be storing stacks of flammable, expired hand sanitizer in a warehouse in Seneca County.
Eduard Zaydman, who owns New Age Renewable Energy, was issued a violation letter from county code enforcement earlier this week. Today, he received a notice of violations from the DEC demanding he cease and desist all operations at the warehouse, immediately secure the site and inform the department of other locations in the state where he might be storing similar products.
Approximately 180,000 gallons of expired hand sanitizer were found inside the warehouse at the former Seneca Army Depot in Romulus, with another 2,000 gallons in open-top totes outside.
This isn’t the first time Zaydman has been in trouble for storing hand sanitizer. In late August, a massive fire leveled his storage warehouse in Gorham, Ontario County, which was also filled with hand sanitizer, leading to contamination of the nearby creek. Zaydman had no permits for the storage of flammable materials and had been sued by the town of Gorham after ignoring demands to clear the site.
Seneca County Board of Supervisors Chairman Michael Enslow says Zaydman didn’t have permits for the Seneca County site either.
“There’s no active fire suppression system, no fire alarm system, the electricity is cut to the building,” said Enslow.
Assemblyman Jeff Gallahan, who was outspoken after the Gorham fire and urged the state attorney general to investigate, said in a statement that what’s happening at the former Seneca Army Depot is eerily similar to the dangerous situation in Gorham. He called on inspectors to move with urgency to avoid another potential disaster.
The DEC press office said it would be issuing a statement Friday about these latest developments. News10NBC is still waiting for their comments.
