The NFL is far and away the most popular sports league in America.
While football dominates in the U.S., NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is now focused on growing the sport’s popularity worldwide.
The NFL has played international games in several countries as part of its global expansion strategy. They most recently played a regular season game in Dublin, Ireland for the first time ever.
The NFL has played games in Mexico, England, Germany, Brazil, Canada, with Spain set to host its first game later this year and Australia expected to join the list in 2026.
However, it’s been reported that Goodell has his eyes set on Asia — specifically China — eyeing the vast revenue potential and market growth the region could bring.
In an exclusive interview with talkSPORT, ESPN NFL insider Dan Graziano shared what he’s heard about the league’s potential plans to play a game in China in the near future.
“They’d like to play in China,” Graziano said. “That’s been out there for a while. I don’t know exactly what that would look like or where it would be — there’s been talk of Beijing, Hong Kong, whatever. So when he says ‘Asia,’ that’s where my mind goes, just because that’s what I’ve heard the most about.
“They had a meeting a few years back where they kind of went through all the potential international destinations and how realistic each one was and obviously Asia is tough because it’s farther away.
“So how do you do it travel wise, how do you make it fair?
“But the fact that they’ve now done Brazil a couple of times, which is an incredibly long flight for NFL teams, and they do it that first Friday of the regular season, so no one’s had a game the week before.
“I think that’s a step toward eventually playing in more far-flung places. They want to open up new markets and revenue streams wherever possible. So yes, they’ll continue to push on that.”
The Steelers took down the Vikings in the NFL’s first regular-season game in IrelandGetty Goodell wants the NFL to become a global leagueGetty“I believe they’d like to have an international game every week if they could. That’s their ideal situation.
“I don’t know if the coaches and GMs and players would agree that it’s an ideal situation, but too bad that that’s where it’s headed. We’re only going to see more expansion of international games in different markets.”
Before the Steelers and Vikings got underway in Dublin last week, Goodell made it known that he would like to see the NFL dip into Asia. He made it no secret.
“I think our next step after Australia will probably be moving games into Asia,” Goodell said. “That’s a continent we would like to be playing in. We are serious about being a global sport.
“We have such great players, past and present — and in the future.”
talkSPORT reported ahead of the NFL’s 2025 season opener that the league hopes to eventually host 16 international games annually, allowing all 32 teams to play at least one home or away game abroad each year.
NFL's Greatest......
Ranking the top 10......
Quarterbacks of all-time – Can anyone better Tom Brady?
Wide receivers of all-time – Does Randy Moss or Jerry Rice come out on top?
Running backs of all-time – Stacking Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Emmitt Smith and more
Tight ends of all-time – How does Travis Kelce compare?
Goodell all but confirmed that hopeful vision.
“I do think our game is going to be global,” the commissioner said.
“We would like to get to 16 games, so everyone’s playing one game a year internationally.”
The NFL has no plans to slow down anytime soon. While its popularity continues to grow, Goodell previously set a goal for NFL revenue to reach $25 billion by 2027, and the world’s richest sports league could surpass that eye-popping figure well before his deadline.
