For the first time since that frightening afternoon in Sydney on October 25, Shreyas Iyer is beginning to look in his element again.
Two months after suffering a ruptured spleen while fielding during the third ODI against Australia, the Indian ODI vice-captain has finally resumed proper batting work. Iyer shared a video from the nets at the Cricket Club of India and later posted a picture from the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, where his rehabilitation has officially entered the next phase.
The 31-year-old has been out of competitive cricket since that incident which landed him in the ICU with internal bleeding. Since then, the process has been slow, cautious and tightly monitored. But the sight of Iyer playing controlled shots in the nets, even if at a lighter intensity, is the clearest sign yet that his comeback road is now visible.
What stood out in the clip was the protective gear around his mid-section, exactly where he suffered the injury.

Iyer has now reported to the BCCI’s CoE in Bengaluru, where he will spend the next few days under constant medical supervision. According to earlier reports, his latest ultrasound scans showed steady improvement, a development reviewed by sports medicine expert Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala, who then cleared him to move from basic mobility work to cricket-specific training.
Despite the encouraging progress, a return for the New Zealand ODI series starting January 11 remains highly unlikely. The focus remains on ensuring complete healing, not short-term availability. Ruturaj Gaikwad has filled Iyer’s No.4 role in the meantime, and the team management is in no mood to gamble with a player who only recently came out of the ICU.
