Blackhawks Assign Kevin Korchinski to Rockford ...Middle East

Somewhat surprisingly, the Chicago Blackhawks assigned defenseman Kevin Korchinski to the Rockford IceHogs on Tuesday afternoon.

The move itself isn’t surprising, but the timing is. Earlier in the day after the morning skate, Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill was asked about the competition on the blue line. He said he does like making decisions before he “has to.” Which felt like it implied final cuts would wait until the weekend, when the Blackhawks play a back-to-back at the United Center to close their preseason schedule.

Apparently the organization wants Korchinski to report to Rockford and get to work with the IceHogs now.

It certainly appeared thus far in camp that both Ethan Del Mastro and Nolan Allan had better chances of making the opening night roster than Korchinski. This roster move, coupled with the injury to Alex Vlasic, opens the door for Matt Grzelcyk to maybe earn a contract. Grzelcyk and Del Mastro will skate against Detroit on Tuesday night.

With Korchinski in Rockford, the Blackhawks roster now sits at 29 players: 16 forwards, 10 defensemen and three goaltenders.

Note: since folks in the comments like to count the players on their fingers, a reminder that 29 includes injured players Joey Anderson, Laurent Brossoit and Ty Henry. There are really 15 “healthy” forwards, nine “healthy” defensemen (if we’re including Grzelcyk, who is still on a PTO) and two healthy goaltenders remaining. According to Blashill, Vlasic and Landon Slaggert are both on track to be in the lineup to start the regular season, but have missed time because of injuries.
