Syrian Foreign Ministry Condemns Chants Offensive to Egypt

Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates condemned chants insulting to Egypt that were voiced during a solidarity rally for Gaza in Damascus.

In a statement published Monday, September 29, on its official channels, the ministry said such reprehensible behavior does not reflect the feelings of the Syrian people toward Egypt, its leadership, or its citizens, but only those who engaged in it.

The ministry expressed regret that some individuals sought to exploit the incident to disturb the “deep and solid fraternal relations” between Syria and Egypt.

It reaffirmed its appreciation and respect for Egypt and its people, who hosted hundreds of thousands of Syrians in recent years.

The statement emphasized Syria’s commitment to strengthening and preserving Syrian-Egyptian ties, firmly rejecting any attempt to undermine them.

    The chants incident

On September 26, social media users circulated a video showing a small group near the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus chanting insults against Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. The chants were made in protest of Egypt’s closure of the Rafah border crossing between the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula and the suspension of humanitarian aid deliveries to Palestinians.

The video sparked reactions beyond Egyptian citizens’ condemnation, as monitored by Enab Baladi, extending to calls for the deportation of Syrian refugees. The hashtag “Deporting refugees is a popular demand” (#ترحيل_اللاجئين_مطلب_شعبي) trended in Egypt on the X platform.

    Bilateral relations

Although Egypt exercised caution toward Syria in the early months following the fall of the former regime, meetings between the two sides never stopped. The most recent was between Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani and his Egyptian counterpart, Badr Abdelatty, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly’s 80th session in New York.

Earlier, in March, Syria’s transitional president, Ahmad al-Sharaa, met Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi during an extraordinary Arab summit to discuss developments in the Palestinian issue.

Former Syrian diplomat Bashar Hajj Ali previously told Enab Baladi that Syrian-Egyptian relations currently stand at a cautious crossroads—“neither a rupture nor broad openness.”

He explained that Cairo is observing political shifts in Damascus with caution, while Syria remains focused on domestic reorganization and shaping a new regional approach. Communication, he added, is maintained at a minimum level, but has yet to evolve into structured cooperation or a strategic partnership.

    Challenges ahead

The future of relations between the new Syrian government and Egypt hinges on several challenges and reservations from the Egyptian side. Damascus has repeatedly sought to reassure Cairo that the Syrian revolution has ended and that no ideology promoting its export exists.

Karam Saeed, an Egyptian researcher at the Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies, told Enab Baladi that multiple factors continue to push Egypt toward a policy of “extreme diplomacy” with Syria. Among them is the presence of foreign fighters, including Egyptians, who had joined the armed Syrian opposition and remain wanted in Egypt.

He stressed the need for these fighters to be extradited to their home countries, noting this is not only Egypt’s view but also that of broader regional and international actors.

Saeed added that many global powers are waiting to see how Syria’s internal situation unfolds in the coming phase, since the new administration’s policies will determine the future direction of international engagement with Damascus.
