The Late Show With Stephen Colbert isn’t the only program that met its end despite all the Emmy nominations this year.
News broke on Saturday, September 6 that Amazon Prime Video has canceled Spider-Noir after just one season — and the Nicolas Cage-led series headed into the current Primetime Emmy Awards with a whopping 11 nods (the most of any Prime Video series this year). Can you believe it?
Fans were certainly waiting to hear what its Oscar-winning star, 62 — who had welcomed the web-slinger as his first-ever TV role — had to say about the sudden axing. And on Sunday, September 6, Cage issued the following response to Deadline:
“For me, one season is perfect, having said what I wanted to say with this dangerous, innovative, pop-art Spider-Man. Onwards, upwards, inwards.”
Back in May, Cage had told Variety he did “not know” if his detective Spidey would return for a second season. “But I would say that whether it happens or not, all of us achieved what we set out to do, and it works on its own,” he also told the magazine in an article published May 30.
Season 1 has an impressive 92% average critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, plus a 90% audience consensus. Here’s the website’s offered synopsis, for those not yet familiar: “Private eye Ben Reilly is living easy and lazy until mobsters, monsters and a femme fatale drag him back to his former life as NY’s only superhero.”
Why Was Spider-Noir Canceled?
Reports cite the show’s staggering $400 million production budget and extensive reshoots as the primary reasons a second season won’t be moving forward.
The cancellation also comes at an interesting time for Prime Video. Spider-Noir was the first series to emerge from a deal between Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios to develop shows based on Spider-Man and related characters.
According to Entertainment Weekly, another project from the partnership is already in development and expected to be announced soon.
