This British rock band reunited for the first time in more than two decades.
Gene — made up of singer Martin Rossiter, guitarist Steve Mason, bassist Kevin Miles and drummer Matt James — had their first show since 2004 at the Brudenell Social Club in Leeds on Sunday evening and performed a two-hour set for their most loyal fans.
The Britpop band was formed in London in 1993. After rising to fame in the mid-1990s, the UK music press categorized Gene as a Britpop band and were often drawn comparisons to the English rock band The Smiths.
After releasing four studio albums and many singles and EPs, Gene decided to split in 2004 to focus on solo projects. After announcing the split in June 2004, the band had their last live performance on Dec. 16, 2004, at the London Astoria.

Then, an official Facebook page for the band was created, and they started sharing teasers hinting at a London-based event to mark the 30th anniversary of their debut album, Olympian. In March, the band officially announced a gig to mark the anniversary, which will take place this Saturday at the Eventim Apollo in London.
Then, in April, the band announced on Instagram a warm-up gig in Leeds, which took place on Sunday evening. The group performed 25 songs from the hit albums of the 1990s, opening with "London, Can You Wait?" off their 1995 debut album Olympian and closing with "Who Said This Was the End."
Gene posted after the show on Instagram, thanking their fans for a great night.
"In the blink of an eye, we are back," they wrote as their Instagram caption. "Thank you, Leeds ??."

In addition to their reunion shows in Leeds, Sheffield and London that are taking place this next week, Gene is set to go on a tour in March 2026 around the United Kingdom, making stops at Nottingham, Glasgow, Bristol, Dublin and Manchester. Prior to their comeback concert on Sunday night, Gene released their first single in more than two decades, titled "TAKEOFF" on Sept. 19. The last time they released music on Spotify was in 2001, which was a compilation album named As Good As It Gets - The Best of Gene.
Fans can purchase tickets for their Reunion Show on Saturday at the Eventim Apollo, as well as their upcoming spring tour on their official LinkTree website.
