Julianne Hough And Alfonso Ribeiro Defend Celeb Dancers With Experience On ‘DWTS’

Julianne Hough and Alfonso Ribeiro are weighing in on fans’ reactions to some of the upcoming Dancing with the Stars contestants actually having dance experience.

Chatting on the first episode of this season’s DWTS podcast, hosted by Season 34 alum Andy Richter, the three got to chatting about what the comedian referred to as the “controversy” of contestants, including Jenna Dewan and Harry Shum Jr., entering the ballroom with notable dance backgrounds — a factor that has struck a nerve with fans.

“Over the last 20 years, I feel like as this show has evolved, we’ve really been an educator for the audience,” Hough explained, referring to fans’ current expectations. “Now they know what good dancing looks like [and] they want to see good dancing.”

However, Hough — who was a pro on the show before becoming host — explained that all dance experience doesn’t necessarily translate to the ballroom.

“The other part is, any dancer who is is is technical isn’t necessarily the best dancer, and I don’t even mean on Dancing with the Stars,” she added. “I mean as a professional dancer watching people dance, somebody could have the best technique, and I don’t connect with them.”

Ribeiro, who took home the mirrorball trophy for Season 19 during 2014 before becoming host, also chimed in on the discussion bringing up his own dance experience.

“You might know how to hip hop, you might know ballet, but the moment you’re doing a ballroom style, it’s starting over, and you have to unlearn everything that you know,” he said.

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air icon also shared that Dewan recently shared with him just how difficult the transition into ballroom style dancing has been for her.

“She was like, ‘Oh my God, this is so much harder than I thought’ and I’m like, ‘Yes, because you have to unlearn. You’ve got to actually start over,'” he recalled.

Coincidentally, before it was officially announced that Dewan was joining the show, she acknowledged the fact that despite her experience as a background dancer for Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake — and having starred in the iconic dance film Step Up — that transitioning from her style of dance to ballroom would be tough.

“I mean I’ve never ballroom danced so it would be hard, ” she said earlier this year. “I have so much respect for everyone on that show.”

Fast forward to this month and it was announced that Dewan is partnered with pro Val Chmerkovskiy. The two have been posting fun clips of their rehearsal time together ahead of this week’s two-night premiere on ABC. ? SIGN UP for Parade’s Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox ?
