No. 11 Alabama soccer beat Auburn in a 1-0 shutout Friday to win its SEC opener. This win marks the Crimson Tide’s seventh straight win over the Tigers, and seventh straight win of the Iron Bowl of Soccer trophy.
“It was a well-deserved win on our part,” head coach Wes Hart said. “For the seventh year in the row, we’re taking the trophy home with us and I’m super proud of the girls. They battled and competed hard tonight.”
The first half was off to a slower start, with Alabama only having three shots, one of them on goal, compared to Auburn’s seven shots, with three of them on goal. With more shots on goal, Auburn also held most of the possession in the first half.
In the 33rd minute, Alabama finally broke through and was able to score a goal. Defender Kennedy Garcia sent the ball to the bottom left corner off of her right boot.
“I don’t think it was a great start to the game. Auburn probably had a little more control than us in the first half although we got the goal,” Hart said.
In the second half, things started to change for the Crimson Tide. Even though no more goals were scored, Alabama had 10 shots compared to Auburn’s five.
In the 81st minute, Auburn’s defender Tahirah Turnage-Morales was given a yellow card for arguing with the referee.
Alabama’s defense held strong, with goalkeeper Madi Munguia earning her fifth shutout of the season and making five saves against the Tigers, tying her season high.
“In the second half we turned the game and had a lot of possession and a lot of chances,” Hart said.
The Crimson Tide will be back in action next Friday, Sept. 18. The game is set for kickoff at 7 p.m. CT at home against the Arkansas Razorbacks.
