‘A lot of headaches’ – UFC legend Wanderlei Silva shows off serious injuries from post-fight brawl after wild DQ loss

Wanderlei Silva has revealed several nasty injuries following his wild boxing debut this past weekend.

The UFC Hall of Famer was left unconscious in the ring after his loss sparked an insane post-fight brawl.

Silva, 49, faced former two-division boxing champion Acelino Freitas, 50, in an exhibition bout in Sao Paulo on Saturday and was disqualified after headbutting his opponent in the fourth round.

This caused members of both sides to flood the ring, and a huge brawl ensued, leaving Silva motionless on the canvas after being struck with a vicious right hand from a man alleged to be Freitas’ son.

Silva’s cornerman, former UFC champion Fabricio Werdum – who was also involved in the post-fight chaos – said Silva suffered a broken nose in a medical update via Instagram on Sunday.

Silva has now shared his thoughts on the incident as he attempts to identify the extent of his injuries.

Wanderlei Silva testing for ‘serious head injuries’

“Look how my eye is,” Silva said in a video message translated by Heavy.

“I am very well accompanied by my doctor and my wife. Honestly, I was well taken care of at the event.

“They took me to the hospital yesterday, and I had some tests done, but I have since had a really bad headache.

“I will do more tests here in Curitiba to be able to figure out what happened to me and if I have any more serious head injuries.

“I will also see an ophthalmologist because I am not able to open my eye, and this was the damage caused yesterday.

“This week I will do the exams and bring more news. Thank you for rooting for me and for all of the messages.”WARNING: GRAPHIC IMAGES

Werdum also shared his point of view through an Instagram post, which has been translated by MMA Fighting.

“The images don’t lie. Everybody saw what happened,” he said.

“We were in there, [coach Andre] Dida, [Silva’s son] Thor and I, we entered the ring when it was all over and Wanderlei was disqualified…

“I think it was 20 of them, and only me, Wanderlei, Thor and Dida, and we were reacting to their attacks.

“They started screaming and coming at us, and we were in four. It was so evil for that guy to punch Wanderlei.

“He punched the back of Wanderlei’s head. I don’t know if it landed clean, but it could have been something very serious.

Silva was knocked out unconscious after he was disqualified on his boxing debut

“Wanderlei is here in the hospital now, getting stitched up. [The punch] broke Wanderlei’s nose because he was very mean. Wanderlei had his gloves on, tired from the fight.”

Silva was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame last year after a legendary MMA career that spanned 22 years.

He fought 12 times in Dana White’s promotion and challenged Tito Ortiz for the UFC light heavyweight title in 2000.

After a stint at Pride FC, where he served as the promotion’s middleweight champion, ‘The Axe Murderer’ knocked out Brian Stann in his last UFC appearance in March 2013, before stepping away from the sport for four years.

Silva returned under the Bellator banner in June 2017, suffering a unanimous decision defeat to fellow UFC icon Chael Sonnen.

He was then knocked out by Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson in September of the following year at Bellator 206 in his final MMA fight.

Silva has been knocked out numerous times in his career

The devastating knockout of Silva was a tough watch for numerous MMA fans, given that the Brazilian had previously detailed experiencing symptoms of concussion.

Last year, the UFC settled an antitrust lawsuit, agreeing to pay $375 million to 1,067 former fighters for being underpaid between 2010 and 2017.

During the UFC lawsuit, Silva released a statement, saying: “I fear that during my career I have suffered traumatic brain injury (TBI) and am noticing symptoms common with TBI and CTE.”

Members of the MMA fraternity hope Silva’s boxing debut means the former UFC and Pride fighter will no longer be involved in contesting any form of combat sports bout.
