Legendary college football coach Lou Holtz has seen a lot of things in the sport, but he is finally getting to witness something unique: Arkansas and Notre Dame playing each other.
“I really didn’t (expect to see it), but that is something the athletic directors have to do,” Holtz said while wearing an Arkansas ballcap and being interviewed by FOX 16. “One thing about Notre Dame and Arkansas, you don’t need this matchup to fill the stadium. You sweep out the stadium and people will fill it up just to watch. There is something special about both Arkansas and Notre Dame.
“These are two schools that are really special for different reasons, but they are very similar. One is a national school, and one is just the best state in the country.”
Holtz, 88, coached both the Razorbacks and Fighting Irish in his storied career. Holtz led Arkansas from 1977 to 1983 and then coached Notre Dame from 1986 to 1996. Holtz is the only college football coach to lead 6 different programs to bowl games, and the only coach to guide 4 different programs to the final top 15 rankings. The College Football Hall of Famer also coached the 1988 Fighting Irish to the consensus national championship.
