Virginia fans stormed the field in ‘dangerous’ scenes on Friday night, as the Cavaliers upset No. 8 Florida State 46-38 in double overtime.
A back-and-forth thriller ended with a game-sealing interception in the end zone, right in front of the home student section at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville.
Florida State quarterback Tommy Castellanos was picked off by Virginia’s Ja’Son Prevard, sparking one of the fastest field storms seen in college football.
Thousands of fans who had been standing on the lawn behind the end zone, with no barrier between them and the field, rushed forward as Prevard came down with the ball.
Many swarmed the players and coaches in a raucous scene, and at least one Virginia supporter was seen on the TV broadcast flipping off Castellanos while celebrating the shock victory, in the same week that Fox’s $7 billion college football deal has been questioned.
Another was seen climbing one of the goalposts.
ESPN reported on Friday evening that no players or coaches were injured in the field storm, but that witnesses saw ‘at least one fan being taken off the field on a stretcher, and at least a dozen others being tended to by stadium personnel’.
FSU head coach Mike Norvell was not aware of any injuries following the hectic incident.
“I’m not sure of any issues,” he said.
“I mean, we got everybody in the locker room.”
Virginia coach Tony Elliott, meanwhile, condemned the behavior of fans and expressed regret at being unable to speak to Norvell and Florida players after the game.
“I hope that nobody got injured,” he said.

What punishment will Virginia face after their fans stormed the field?
After Cavaliers supporters swarmed the field, Virginia is set to face a massive fine from the ACC under new rules.
The school will likely have to pay $50,000 after the league added the event security fine this year to penalize institutions which don’t prevent storms in football and basketball.
FSU was fined the same amount for fans coming on the field after beating Alabama in August.
The ACC policy, which was put into place before the start of the 2025 season, applies to football and men’s and women’s basketball games and is designed to protect the safety of players, coaches, officials and fans.

All money collected will go into a postgraduate scholarship fund, which helps athletes pursuing graduate school.
Opinion split over ‘dangerous’ Virginia field storm
Footage of Cavaliers students storming the turf quickly went viral on social media, with other football fans split on the behavior the unfolded.
“Virginia with one of the most dangerous field storms I’ve ever seen,” one person wrote on X.

“Awesome football game, and what a huge moment for Virginia Football. But that was easily the most dangerous field storming I’ve seen in college football,” another said.
“I don’t wanna sound anti fun… but that Virginia field storm could have been really bad and dangerous. FSU receiver on the ground could have easily been trampled. Students shouldn’t have been on top of the field like that,” a third wrote.
“NCAA needs to come down hard on that one. Unacceptable both for the safety of the FSU players and the safety of the students,” a fourth said.
Others, though, loved what they saw.

“What an absolutely sensational field storm at Virginia. Worth the fine,” one wrote.
“Best one I’ve seen,” another claimed.
“One of the great things about college football is the passionate fans, but they’re lucky there wasn’t a flag on that final play,” a third suggested.
With an upset win against FSU, Virginia has moved to 4-1 on the season.
Quarterback Chandler Morris, who is starting for his third team in as many years, scored five touchdowns before the Cavaliers defense made a stand in second overtime to secure victory.
FSU are now 3-1, and face Miami in a monster rivalry game next weekend.
