Europe create incredible Ryder Cup history after American fires ‘absolute gamesmanship’ accusations

Europe blazed their way to a blistering start to the 45th Ryder Cup, and might have stolen the advantage with the latest bout of mind games.

Luke Donald’s team overcame an early barrage from Bryson DeChambeau in the opening game to win the first three foursome matches in the opening session.

It was the first time in Ryder Cup. history they’ve done so on American soil and if Brandel Chamblee is to be believed, Europe’s work away from the course is paying off.

Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton took down Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas 4&3, followed by Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood defeating Collin Morikawa and Harris English 5&4.

Ludvig Aberg and Matt Fitzpatrick handled world No.1 Scottie Scheffler and debutant Russell Henley with a 5&3 victory.

Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay avoided the sweep, giving the US its first point by defeating Robert MacIntyre and Viktor Hovland 2UP.

It’s Europe’s first opening-session lead away from home since 2004, and their dominant 3-1 start bodes well for their chances to repeat.

According to Elias, teams earning at least three points in the opening session have gone 7-1 in the Ryder Cup since 1991.

Chamblee hinted that he may have seen this coming by what Donald did a few days ago at the driving range.

On Thursday, Chamblee appeared on The Dan Patrick Show, and said he saw Team Europe move to the middle of the range during the week’s practise, forcing Team USA to split up on either side of their European opponents.

Safe to say, he did not appreciate Donald’s sly tactic.

“It’s the mental aspect of it, it’s mano a mano, they’ll be some gamesmanship, there already has been some gamesmanship,” Chamblee said.

“Luke Donald has a little gamesmanship with his opening remarks,” he added referring to the Englishman’s pointed comment on the event meaning more than money, as the US players are being paid for the first time in history.

“The European team out on the range, I don’t know if it was yesterday or today.

“Instead of going to one end so the US side could uniformly practice at another end, the European team went right in the middle so the US team had to split up and go to either side of them.

“That is absolutely gamesmanship by the European team.”

If Europe’s early lead comes at the cost of being accused of gamesmanship by a seemingly bitter Chamblee, they’ll gladly pay.

Chamblee also told Sky Sports that he believes another misstep by Team USA could cost them the Ryder Cup. Chamblee doesn’t like the fact that Team USA is getting paid to play in the historic event.

“Look, I think the US has done a pretty good job of spinning this,” Chamblee told Sky Sports before the event began.

“They’ve spun it towards philanthropy. Scottie Scheffler said as much.

“Xander Schauffele spoke, I believe he said he was giving it all to charity. Keegan Bradley said he’s giving it all to charity. But it’s been clear that there was a push on the US side, and where exactly it was coming from is not 100% known, but nonetheless there was a strong push that they wanted to get paid.

“The story was that $300,000 was meant to be earmarked for charity — $200,000 of it, which I don’t like calling a stipend because that euphemizes it, is actually a payment to play in the Ryder Cup.

“For me, the honor of playing in a Ryder Cup is about personal sacrifice and the profound sense of pride that comes from representing your country and in doing so, carrying the hopes of millions of people from your country while embodying the values and spirits of your country on a stage.

“And asking to be paid for that is unethical to the privilege of playing for your country. I think Europe gets that and I thought that the United States asking to be paid could prove to be such distraction that by end of the week it may well be the reason they lose the Ryder Cup.”
