The surprising winter sun destination rated good value as top 10 revealed

Despite the stubbornly high cost of living in the UK, those yearning for winter sun could find a ray of hope in destinations where the pound will buy more than last year, and the cost of every day items is low.

South-east Asia offers some of the best value for long-haul holidaymakers this winter, with Vietnam, Bali and Thailand among the destinations where the pound will stretch furthest, according to the Post Office’s latest Travel Money Long Haul Holiday Report.

The central Vietnamese city of Hoi An has been named the best-value long-haul destination for British travellers. The cost of a “basket” of 10 typical holiday items in the pretty, coastal city averages just £58.81. The basket includes suncream, bottled water, insect repellent and a three-course meal for two with wine. The town is known for its tailors, where you can have custom-made outfits for as little as £80 turned around overnight.

The average holiday basket cost is a year-on-year fall of 11 per cent, thanks to a small drop in local prices, combined with the weakened Vietnamese dong.

Last year’s second-best value destination, Tokyo, has dropped to fifth position in the table. However, winter visitors will continue to find great value, particularly when it comes to dining out. The average cost of a glass of wine is just £2.70 – compared to £4.57 in Hoi An – and a three-course meal for two with wine is just over £44, half the cost of a similar meal in Saint Lucia.

The relative weakness of Japan’s Yen is attracting visitors to the country, which was on course to welcome almost 25m visitors in the first six months of this year. Last year, Japan saw a record 36.8m visitors.

And while Tokyo typically sees highs of just 12°C in December, the Okinawa islands offer mild beach weather and off-peak pricing. Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways offer domestic flights from Tokyo at discounted prices for visitors from overseas, with one way fares from around £65.

A strong pound has contributed to keeping costs down for UK travellers in other destinations too. In Bali, a fall in the Indonesian rupiah has offset rising local prices, meaning British holidaymakers will pay slightly less for essentials than last year, at £67.79.

Dinner for two with wine on the island averages just £35.48 – the cheapest of the 30 destinations surveyed.

Laura Plunkett, head of travel money at Post Office, said: “Sterling is stronger than a year ago against most Asian currencies, and in many cases local prices are falling too. That combination means British tourists can expect their holiday money to go further in Asia than almost anywhere else this winter.”

Penang in Malaysia and Phuket in Thailand experienced price drops of 18.6 (to £83.85) and 14.1 per cent (to £87.82) respectively, putting them in seventh and ninth place.

New York, last year’s highest-priced destination, came in second most expensive for 2025, at £165.85.

One resort previously known as a bargain winter sun escape, Egypt’s Sharm el-Sheikh, has seen costs rise more than 40 per cent year-on-year, to £110.21.
