Because there have been a few comments on the socials about my bullets on Wednesday, I want to circle back to the idea that the Blackhawks had a “much-needed day off.” Yes, training camp is hard. Yes, new head coach Jeff Blashill is working them incredibly hard. The Blackhawks have a new coaching staff, new systems and new expectations. Blashill is trying to establish a culture for the future with a roster that is beginning to incorporate more young players. The future is coming, and Blashill knows this can’t be a comfortable, skate-yourself-into-shape camp that some more veteran teams might enjoy when they’re fairly well established.
With that in mind, I appreciate this column from Ben Pope at the Chicago Sun-Times, in which he wrote about the fine line between establishing that work ethic and making sure a team that’s built to play fast can do that for a full 60 minutes and… pulling a Jeremy Colliton. Pope walks it back to the fall of 2021 when the wheels came flying off.
Jeff Blashill's intense approach to Blackhawks training camp has been impressive. But he must be careful not to over-work and over-tinker like Jeremy Colliton did during the disastrous camp of 2021.New column: t.co/3M5LVtSiaD
— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) September 24, 2025 Yesterday I broke the seal on people realizing that the Blackhawks had essentially already sorted their roster into Rockford IceHogs and potential Blackhawks for practice. That became even more evident when the “Rockford” group took the ice and IceHogs head coach Jared Nightingale was running practice. Here’s what the Blackhawks lineup looked like with the NHL group on Thursday morning:Ryan Donato — Connor Bedard — André Burakovsky Teuvo Teräväinen — Frank Nazar — Tyler Bertuzzi Nick Foligno — Jason Dickinson — Ilya Mikheyev Colton Dach — Ryan Greene — Sam Lafferty Oliver Moore — Lukas Reichel (Landon Slaggert did not skate)
Alex Vlasic — Sam Rinzel Wyatt Kaiser — Artyom Levshunov Ethan Del Mastro — Connor Murphy Matt Grzelcyk* — Louis Crevier
Spencer Knight Arvid Söderblom
At The Athletic, Scott Powers put together his list of the ten (10) Blackhawks prospects who should have your attention this season who won’t be in Chicago or Rockford (yet). The Blackhawks have more and more prospects arriving to the Chicago and Rockford, but there are even more behind them. Here are 10 prospects to be following in Europe, college and CHL this season ⤵️ t.co/nhmoJP9id0
— Scott Powers (@ByScottPowers) September 25, 2025 Corey Pronman and Harman Dayal at The Athletic wrote about players who might be available on waivers when final roster cuts come in the next ten days. I actually went there interested to see if there was anyone who might intrigue the Blackhawks listed. I didn’t see a name on their list that got my attention as a potential pick-up for Chicago. Another name I didn’t see: Lukas Reichel. He would require waivers to go to Rockford if he isn’t one of the 13 (maybe 14?) forwards on the NHL roster when the season begins. Reichel’s name has floated around trade talk over the past month; he’s been mentioned by Elliotte Friedman on the “32 Thoughts” Podcast more than once as a guy who is probably available. We’ll see. In my Around the NHL post yesterday I shared that Florida Panthers captain Sasha Barkov went down in practice and needed help getting off the ice. It didn’t look good (I included the video yesterday). That’s a potentially huge piece of news to watch for updates on Friday with the Blackhawks playing at the Panthers in the first game of the NHL’s 2025 regular season. They’re already going to be without Matthew Tkachuk until December. The Minnesota Wild are celebrating their 25th anniversary with some throwbacks of their own. These are better than their Eddie Bauer alternates but still very meh.The @mnwild just dropped New Jerseys, honoring the franchise’s 25th season in the NHL ? pic.twitter.com/FhKuL7m4xN
