The only outstanding question, then, is where those games will be played.
When the Cubs clinched a playoff spot over a week ago, I said they probably only needed to win two more games to wind up getting that top Wild Card spot, and thus hosting the Wild Card Series. I figured, naively, that they would win several more than two games and make it a cake walk.
They have won just once.
I suppose that is to say, if the Cubs can just avoid getting swept by the Cardinals this weekend, they will PROBABLY still get that top Wild Card spot, because the Padres PROBABLY won’t sweep the Diamondbacks. Since the magic number is two, that’s all it would take. Nobody do any sweepin’, and things will be fine.
But the Cubs could just dispense with all the drama by simply winning two of these three final games. I’m sure the Cardinals won’t want to play spoilers against their historic rival, right?
Anyway, I’ll just be over here thinking about how MLB didn’t put either of Kyle Tucker or Cade Horton in the graphic there, and overanalyzing the extent to which they openly wonder whether either guy will actually appear in the Wild Card Series …
