Team Europe will be prepared for a hostile atmosphere at the Ryder Cup, but that is the least of Viktor Hovland’s worries.
The 2025 edition gets underway today at Bethpage Black in New York, and Luke Donald‘s men face a fight to retain their 2023 trophy.
The Europeans were victorious last time around, beating the USA by a score of 16.5 to 11.5 in Rome.
But they can expect a real test this year, with a raucous US crowd expected to make life difficult for them.
‘I find it really interesting’
While most of Europe’s 12-man squad will be thinking of ways to block out the noise, Hovland might have found the perfect solution.
The Norwegian has revealed an unlikely interest in UFOs has helped take his mind off golf.
Having been part of Europe’s triumphant team in 2023, Hovland has spent the years since brushing up on his knowledge on matters away from the sport.
Speaking to the media ahead of Friday’s opening sessions, he said: “It’s just something that I’ve been into the last couple years.
“I think I’ve always been extremely into my golf, and sometimes you just look at your golf swing and trying to practice hard and you don’t really get the results that you want, it can be quite frustrating.
“I think it’s been one of those things that I’ve kind of taken my mind off of golf a little bit.
“And then the more you go into it, you just get more questions.
“It’s one of those things that you don’t really find any more answers but it’s very interesting to go in there and kind of challenge some of your beliefs that you currently hold, and you kind of have to expand your mind a little bit.”

I find it really interesting.”
Despite finding a welcome distraction to golf, Hovland will still have to deal with his fair share of hecklers at Bethpage Black.
But the 28-year-old didn’t seem too concerned by this, as he revealed how he would deal with the New York crowd.
Hovland said: “I think you’ve just got to stick to your game, and if you play well, you know, there’s going to be some comments here and there.
“They won’t really come close to the thoughts that I have in my own head.
“So I think I’ll just laugh it off for the most part. You know, just try to smile it off and make a few birdies.

With UFOs keeping his mind occupied in the pressure-cooker environment of the Ryder Cup, you might think some of Hovland’s teammates would look to follow suit.
But that doesn’t seem to be the case, with fellow Team Europe star Ludvig Aberg revealing he is yet to embrace his friend’s passion.
When asked about Hovland’s interest, Aberg said: “He’s always into sort of the UFO deals and all those things, so it’s quite interesting.
“I’m not quite down that road just yet. If I hang out with him long enough, I might be.
“Again, you never really know where it’s going to go, which is quite interesting.”
