Charlie Gardiner. Al Rollins. Glenn Hall. Tony Esposito. Ed Belfour. Corey Crawford. As I’ve written about a few times leading up to the start of the Centennial season, the Chicago Blackhawks have one of the greatest rosters of all-time goalies in the entire NHL.
So, when I saw the latest from Jesse Granger at The Athletic this week, I automatically clicked. He went thru every uniform number and named the best goalie to ever wear it. There are a lot of Blackhawks references and mentions in here. And lots of goaltenders who played for the Blackhawks, including legends Cristobal Huet, Dominik Hašek and Nikolai Khabibulin. I was happy to see Tony O get the nod at 35, a very popular number for some all-time elite goalies. And I was very happy to see Crawford named at 50 as well. Fun read for your post-off-day morning here.

— Jesse Granger (@JesseGranger_) September 23, 2025 I don’t think anyone is running to include Arvid Söderblom in the next edition of Granger’s list, but he was magnificent on Tuesday night. From where he was 18 months ago with fans here and elsewhere offering to pay for his one-way ticket home to being a guy the Blackhawks can comfortably rely on to be a wall behind them, the development has truly been impressive. I wanted to take another moment to give him his flowers because the improvement he’s shown over the past year has been fantastic. Staying with goalies, a terrific piece from Ben Pope at the Chicago Sun-Times on Wednesday talking about Spencer Knight opting to sign a three-year deal with the Blackhawks and bucking the trend of younger goalies signing max, eight-year deals this summer/over the past year. I like Knight’s perspective on the deal:“It’s not a short amount of time,” Knight said. “There’s so much time to change and evolve. I didn’t really see a need to go all the way out and even try to do eight years. Both sides were very comfortable with three.
“Obviously, when you get to the third year from now, you make more decisions. But that’s not something I’m even thinking about now. It’s plenty of time for [the Hawks] to really grow and for me to work on my game.”
Jake Oettinger, Jeremy Swayman and Dustin Wolf all signed 8-year extensions. But Spencer Knight signed only a 3-year extension with the Blackhawks, bucking the trend and altering the NHL goalie market. He explains why in here: t.co/c15vgEiTJ9
— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) September 24, 2025 Going back to the game on Tuesday night, while the Blackhawks were a mess in their defensive zone far too much — something I expected given new coaches, new systems and young players — I will say the fact that they killed four of five penalties successfully was good to see. When you add that some of the guys who were used as primary penalty killers in the game (Ethan Del Mastro, Ryan Greene, Aidan Thompson, Artyom Levshunov) were four of the five guys in the box, not terrible. The coaches expected there to be some learning moments in the game as well. Do they need to be better? Absolutely! Will they get better as they get more comfortable? That’s what the rest of the preseason is for. And, frankly, that’s what the regular season will be about this year as well. You’re going to continue reading that from me this year: this is going to be a young team. They will make mistakes. We need to watch for growth from the mistakes and not overly focus on what goes wrong in the immediate moment. One young Blackhawks skater seemingly on the bubble of making the NHL roster to start the season is Colton Dach. He had a strong first showing in Detroit on Tuesday night. Scott Powers wrote about his good first impression for the new coaching staff. If Colton Dach can check some boxes for the Blackhawks this preseason, he'll likely earn himself a lineup spot out of camp. He began doing that last night ⤵️ t.co/22tRUAiuei
— Scott Powers (@ByScottPowers) September 24, 2025 Kevin Korchinski spent 64 seconds of his 15:40 of ice time on Tuesday night on the PK. He produced one shot on net. This is an important camp for the 21-year-old defenseman, but it is not a career defining camp. Because he’s 21. He was paired with Louis Crevier on Tuesday night, and they weren’t great. As a third pair, they were okay. There were a few moments I specifically liked from Korchinski, but he needs to become more confident and comfortable doing that he does best. And that’s what the Blackhawks’ new coaches are telling him to do. Good read from Ben Pope at the Chicago Sun-Times on precisely that from before the game.Kevin Korchinski's latest attempt to break back into the NHL begins in the Blackhawks' preseason opener tonight. The Hawks have urged him to play to his strengths. — Bleacher Nation Blackhawks (@BN_Blackhawks) September 24, 2025 A few quick updates on ongoing contract negotiations. On Sunday, Darren Dreger reported “discussions between the Nashville Predators and Luke Evangelista; however, the two sides remain significantly apart on money.” David Pagnotta reported on Wednesday that the two sides remain far apart. On the negotiations between RFA defenseman Luke Hughes and the New Jersey Devils, Frank Seravalli reported the two sides “remain focused on what would be a long term deal.” Dennis Bernstein from The Fourth Period reported the Kings and Adrian Kempe are still “not close” on a deal as well.Update on LAK Adrian Kempe contract extension talks from source close to discussions – Still not close to a deal, lots of work to be done.
