Terence Crawford offered new title fight by ‘most avoided champion’ in chance to make more history

Terence Crawford has been called out by Janibek Alimkhanuly, who is willing to meet the undefeated star for his 160lbs title.

Crawford is arguably the hottest property in boxing right now, after completing an extraordinary feat by moving from 154lbs to 168lbs to dethrone undisputed champion Canelo Alvarez.

Alimkhanuly wants to face Crawford having previously called for the bout several times in the pastMikey Williams/Top Rank

‘Bud’ has completed it all and made history by becoming undisputed champion in three weight classes, the first male boxer to do so in the four-belt era.

But now his future is up in the air, with potential retirement and a move to 160lbs to be discussed internally by Crawford and his camp.

Should he choose to move down 8lbs and enter a new division, current unified IBF and WBO champion Alimkhanuly believes a fight makes perfect sense.

He tweeted in a social media call-out: “If Crawford agreed to fight me, I would gladly face him.

“And our fight would be the kind of match every fan would watch with excitement, not wanting to miss a single second.”

Alimkhanuly has failed to yet become a superstar in the sport, having accused several other champions of avoiding him during his undefeated rise.

As a result, he has been labelled by many in the boxing world, including his own team as the ‘most avoided’ champion, given he has yet to become undisputed in the division.

For Crawford, victory over Alimkhanuly could quickly see him back on the road to undisputed glory in a fourth weight category.

All that would stand in his way is WBA king Erislandy Lara, and WBC title-holder Carlos Adames, with Crawford likely to be a huge favourite to snatch the belt from either fighter.

But for now, Crawford will contemplate his next move, but is sat comfortably as the sport’s new pound-for-pound king.

Should Crawford taste victory – he could chase more history and would become a six-weight world championGetty

What is next for Terence Crawford?

Crawford has several potential options at opponents if he chooses to return.

Virgil Ortiz and David Benavidez have both made a plea to face the new divisional king next, and are open to moving up to face him at 160lbs and 168lbs respectively.

A primary target originally was a showdown with British star Chris Eubank Jr, who is campaigning for a world title shot after his November rematch with Conor Benn.

But Crawford’s trainer Brian ‘BoMac’ McIntyre, who also trains Eubank Jr, doesn’t expect the bout to materialise.

“Terence next, he can do whatever he wants to do next, it isn’t down to me,” he said.

“But I don’t want to see that at all [fight vs Eubank Jr], that won’t happen. I don’t want to see that.”
