LA JOLLA – La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, a 21-acre beachside resort renowned for its timeless charm and storied legacy, has completed the first phase of a $60 million renovation.

The resort encompasses three properties, including the exclusive 90-room La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, the 128-room La Jolla Shores Hotel and the award-winning Marine Room restaurant.

Resort amenities include 13 championship tennis courts, five pickleball courts, a nine-hole par-3 golf course, two swimming pools, three oceanfront restaurants and cocktail lounges and one of Southern California’s only private beaches.

Members and guests arriving at the iconic beachfront resort will now experience a transformed pool deck, revitalized outdoor gathering spaces, resurfaced tennis courts and new services.

The transformation aligns with the club’s 90th anniversary, reflecting a thoughtful balance of modern coastal living and enduring family traditions.

“The beach club has been part of my family’s life and the lives of countless others for almost a full century,” said William J. “Bill” Kellogg, president of the club. “This renovation honors that legacy while giving today’s members and guests fresh experiences and more ways to feel at home.

“There are many traditions that have emerged in the past 90 years, like Old Black Goose rides, beach barbecues, Easter egg hunts, Thanksgiving feasts, holiday parties and simply getting together with family and friends on the beach. These things make the beach club so special and the focus of many people’s lives.”

In April 1926, a group of prominent businessmen, including Fredrick William Kellogg, envisioned a club. It started in 1927 as the La Jolla Beach & Yacht Club, which was initially intended to have a yacht harbor.

But it was Kellogg’s purchase of the property in 1935, adding tennis courts, an Olympic-size pool and the beach club apartments, which led to its transformation into a private tennis resort and eventually to its current name.

Kellogg saw the property as more than just a yacht and beach club; his passion for tennis was key to transforming it into a premier tennis resort.

The Kellogg family has continuously owned and operated the club, with expansions including the Marine Room and La Jolla Shores Hotel. Today, the fifth generation of the family, led by Bill Kellogg, continues to manage the properties. The club’s location on a private beach in La Jolla has made it a coveted destination for recreation, while hosting world-renowned tennis pro and major tournaments.

As Bill Kellogg said of the renovation, led by Los Angeles-based design firm Studio UNLTD, “these great improvements to the property will ensure that those traditions are passed on to future generations.

Michael O’Donohue, the club’s managing director, agreed that the club “has always been a place members treasure and visitors return to year after year, generation after generation.”

He added: “As we commemorate 90 years, our focus is on making the experience even more enjoyable. The new spaces and updated amenities reflect what people have always loved about the beach club while adding more comfort, more connection and more reasons to keep coming back.”
