The Cubs have now lost five games in row. They are winless since clinching a playoff spot. Tonight’s loss was particularly brutal, with Cade Horton leaving early with back tightness, the Cubs blowing a huge lead, and the Mets constantly breaking through with two outs when the Cubs were on the cusp of getting out of it.
Probably one of the worst losses of the year.
With a 6-1 lead in the 5th inning, with one runner on base and one out, the Cubs got a bouncer that might’ve ended the inning. Instead, Dansby Swanson biffed on the grounder, and the Mets went on to score five runs and tie the game. It was miserable. Which isn’t to say it was entirely Swanson’s fault – Michael Soroka and Taylor Rogers still had a chance to pitch out of it and couldn’t.
After the Mets briefly took the lead thereafter, the Cubs tied it back on what would’ve been a really nice late-game moment with Seiya Suzuki coming through. Except Francisco Alvarez hit a two-run homer in the 8th to put the Mets in front for good. The misery returned. Or had it never left?
The Cubs hadn’t scored this many runs in a week and they still lost to a Mets team that has been utterly brutal for a very long time.
I guess you could give the Ankin Law “Making It Personal” Player of the Game honors to Nico Hoerner for another three-hit game, and for the four runs he scored. He deserves it. I’m just frustrated that it came in a losing effort.
