The Cincinnati Bengals decided to roll with Jake Browning and wound up getting rolled over by the Minnesota Vikings.
After franchise quarterback Joe Burrow went down injured in Week 2, Browning stepped up to lead a tight 31-27 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.
He threw three picks, but did enough for the team to trust him against a stout Vikings defense.
Dan Graziano told talkSPORT that the Bengals believed they had one of the best backups in the league ahead of the game, but reality hit quickly, and Minnesota ran away with a 48-10 victory — if anything, the scoreline was kind to the Bengals.
Despite a garbage-time score, it was a franchise record defeat as Browning completed 19 of 27 passes for just 140 yards, with one touchdown and two picks.
The Vikings were not afraid of the passer they signed as an undrafted free agent in 2019 and focused on stopping the run.
Cincinnati managed just 53 yards from 21 attempts on the ground.
“There’s a lot we have to prove in the run game,” head coach Zac Taylor said after the game. “It’s not pretty right now. We’re not going to run from that.”
How long is Joe Burrow out for?
Burrow required surgery after suffering severe turf toe on his left foot.
No official timeline for his return has been provided, but ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter has suggested he could be out for a minimum of three months.
Browning is now 4-4 as a starter, having played seven games in 2023 after Burrow suffered a season-ending injury.
Burrow’s injury threatens to derail Cincy’s season GettyShedeur Sanders is buried on the depth chart[/caption]The Bengals are 2-1 having edged past the Cleveland Browns in Week 1 with Joe Burrow under center.
Tough games against the Denver Broncos, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, and Pittsburgh Steelers are next up on the schedule.
There are serious doubts over whether Browning can get the job done, meaning a change could be required.
Should the Bengals trade for Shedeur Sanders?
If the Bengals are looking for a pocket passer in the Burrow mold, there may be a ready-made answer in Shedeur Sanders.
The son of Hall of Fame cornerback Deion, Shedeur is currently the Browns’ third-string quarterback behind Joe Flacco and Dillon Gabriel.
Flacco was booed by his own fans before leading a comeback win over the Packers on Sunday, and Gabriel could soon get a chance to shine.
Shedeur claims he is enjoying life as a scout team quarterback, but would surely jump at the chance to start for the Bengals.
The Browns gave up a fifth-round pick to select Shedeur, and his usage so far suggests that he would be available for a day three selection.
Many around the NFL have claimed that the former Colorado star is being mishandled in Cleveland, with some going as far as to say that his career is being ‘sabotaged.’
But the truth is, 31 teams passed up numerous chances to pick Shedeur and there hasn’t been anything put on tape to suggest he would be a better option than Browning, especially as he doesn’t know the system.
Jameis Winston heads list of potential Bengals QB targets
There are veteran options available to the BengalsAPIf the Bengals do want to explore a trade, Giants third-stringer Jameis Winston would be a viable option.
He is no Burrow, but his reume suggests he could unclock Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, even if he throws a few picks along the way.
Kirk Cousins and Jimmy Garoppolo could also be available.
The Bengals face the Broncos on Monday Night Football, giving Taylor an extra day to find an answer at QB.
If he can’t, he will fail in front of millions in primetime.
