Terence Crawford stripped of world title after beating Canelo Alvarez as new champion crowned

Abass Baraou has succeeded Terence Crawford as the new WBA super welterweight champion.

Crawford was stripped of his 154lbs belt after overcoming Canelo Alvarez two weeks ago for the undisputed super middleweight titles.

‘Bud’ informed the major sanctioning body that he had no intention of returning to the weight class, and therefore, interim title holder Baraou was elevated to full world champion.

The news was confirmed on social media by Baraou’s promoter Wasserman Boxing.

“Abass Baraou is full world champion,” the statement read. “Seat at the top table confirmed for AB, who would you like to see him fight next?”

The German boxer picked up the interim title with an upset win over Yoenis Tellez in August.

Baraou scored a dramatic last-gasp knockdown with 10 seconds remaining on the clock en route to getting his hand raised via unanimous decision.

He is now one of four super welterweight world champions alongside Sebastian Fundora (WBC), Bakhram Murtazaliev (IBF), and Xander Zayas (WBO).

Who will Abass Baraou fight next?

Baraou could make his first defence against former undisputed super welterweight champion Jermell Charlo.

The 35-year-old is the WBA’s ‘champion-in-recess’ and will therefore be made Baraou’s mandatory.

Charlo hasn’t stepped foot between the ropes since September 2023, when he was convincingly beaten on points by Canelo at 168lbs.

Before that, ‘Iron Man’ defeated Brian Castano to unify all the belts in his natural weight class.

While Charlo is the frontrunner to box Baraou, the situation may be complicated if the latter chooses to square off against Errol Spence Jr next.

According to Ring Magazine’s Mike Coppinger, the pair are in negotiations to meet in early 2026.

Charlo appeared to tease a fight against Spence Jr last month in a series of cryptic posts uploaded to his Instagram story.

The first read: “Fight date coming… No friends in the industry.”

He then followed up with a picture of a lion with a shark in its mouth, which many interpreted to be in reference to ‘Big Fish’ Spence Jr.

Charlo and Spence Jr were once gymmates at Derrick James’s ‘World Class Boxing Gym’ in Dallas, Texas.

However, Spence Jr parted ways with James following his defeat to Crawford in July 2023.
