The tiny English village that once had its own airport with flights to Spain

JUST outside the city of Coventry is a tiny village that used to have its own airport.

The village of Baginton in Warwickshire is where you’ll find Coventry Airport which used to fly to international destinations.

Baginton, which is a two-minute drive away from Coventry Airport, is a quiet village with around a thousand residents.

Years ago, residents living in the village and Coventry could have flown from the small airport to the likes of Malaga and Ibiza.

The airline Thomsonfly introduced low-cost flights in March 2004 to Palma, Valencia, Rome, Nice, Marseilles, Naples, Pisa, Venice, and Jersey.

However, after just four years, it ceased passenger operations from Coventry, focusing instead on charter flights.

Coventry Airport still operates, but not for scheduled passenger flights.

However in recent years, there has been talk of closure with the land being earmarked for redevelopment.

As for the village of Baginton, it is generally quiet, but does have a few attractions – one being Lunt Roman Fort.

It’s not open all the time with events being held on particular days, with the next event being part of Heritage Open Week 2025 on September 20, 2025.

There will even be Roman soldiers, Rufus and Gnaeus, who will lead groups around the historic site which dates back to 60AD.

The site has recently been renovated so visitors can take in the village of Baginton from the tallest part of the fort.

There’s even a two-hour tour for any visitors who want to learn more about the fort’s history.

One visitor recently said: “A brilliant morning at the fort! Whilst not a massive site, it is impressive to see and the small museum and amazing staff make it a really great experience!”

Another historical site is Bagot’s Castle, which now just stands as ruins and is open from April to October on weekends and bank holidays.

It was built in the 14th century, now the ruins are free to explore and there are picnic benches scattered around it too.

Admission for adults is £5, for children between 5-16 and the over 60s, it’s £2.50.

There are a few pubs in Baginton, one being The Oak Baginton, which is a family-run business that offers accommodation and home-cooked food.

Another is The Old Mill at the other end of the village which serves country pub classics like toad in the hole and shepherd’s pie.

As for holidays, the closest airport for commercial flights is Birmingham, which is 40 minutes away from Coventry.

Birmingham flies all over Europe as well as other destinations like Florida, Montego Bay, Punta Cana, Amritsar and Dubai.

Check out the nearby museum that that costs just £5 to enter is the UK’s best-rated on TripAdvisor.

As for where to stay, here’s a historic English hotel that dates back 875 years with links to royalty.
