Gambhir advised to become Ranji Trophy coach, Gill dubbed ‘complacent in weak Indian Test team’

Former England cricketer Monty Panesar has advised India cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir to become a Ranji Trophy coach in order to fare better as the national team’s red-ball coach. His comments come amid reports of the BCCI approaching VVS Laxman to replace Gambhir as the red-ball coach, which the board promptly denied. Ignoring England’s humiliating 1-3 record in the Ashes which exposed multiple flaws in the Test team, Panesar claimed that India were a weak side in the longest format of the game currently.

Gambhir asked to become Ranji Trophy coach

In an interview with news agency ANI, Panesar claimed that Gambhir needs to converse with Ranji Trophy coaches in order to gain knowledge on how to build a red-ball team. He claimed that the reality was that the Indian team was weak in Test cricket at present, adding that it would take time to keep the remaining players ready after the retirement of stalwarts Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin. India recently suffered a 0-2 loss at the hands of South Africa at home, marking Gambhir’s second series defeat in India in a span of one year.

“Gautam Gambhir is a good coach in white-ball cricket because he has been successful. However, he could benefit from becoming a Ranji Trophy coach; he should talk to those who have coached in the Ranji Trophy about how to build a team in red-ball cricket. Right now, the Indian team is weak in Test cricket. This is the reality. It will take time. When you retire three big players, it becomes difficult to keep the remaining players ready,” Panesar said.

    Is Shubman Gill complacent?

Panesar further claimed that Indian captain Shubman Gill was a complacent cricketer. He said that the Punjab batter could simply not replicate Virat Kohli’s aggression across formats of the game. Gill had taken over the reins of the Test team earlier in may following Rohit’s retirement and eventually was named the ODI captain as well before the IND vs AUS ODI series.

“He is a complacent cricketer. He has a lot of talent, but he starts playing lazy shots. Virat Kohli’s intensity and aggression are evident in all formats, but Shubman Gill can’t replicate that. It is too much of a burden for him; he can’t be the captain across all formats,” Panesar added.
