FDA Expands Recall on Popular Fall Spice For This Dangerous Reason—Heres What to Know

If I had to guess, you’re probably taking inventory of your spice cabinet in the lead-up to fall baking season to make sure you have everything you need to make cakes and pies aplenty. Nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, and all the warm and cozy spices that give the season its signature flavor and iconic aroma. Whether you’re making pumpkin pie, an apple crumble, cheesecake, or your own homemade pumpkin spice syrup, using any one of these spices is almost inescapable. While they all serve their purpose, though, there’s no spice more ubiquitous once sweater weather hits than cinnamon.

From broomsticks to candles and sweets, and treats galore, cinnamon is the flavor and aroma most of us associate this time of year with. It’s the secret ingredient in Grandma's famous sugar cookies, the subtle hit of flavor in a batch of pancakes, and it smells great in a simmer pot on the stove. But for all its nostalgic lore, the robust and subtly spicy ground inner bark of the cinnamon tree isn’t always necessarily the innocuous and comforting autumnal spice we know and love. In excessive amounts, it can actually make you hallucinate, and we all remember the weird era of the cinnamon challenge.

Beyond those one-offs, though, the favorite fall spice has come under scrutiny in recent years due to reports of elevated levels of lead compounds in commercially available cinnamon powders. While the news originally broke in 2023 after cinnamon applesauce pouches meant for kids were found to contain elevated levels of lead, we’re still dealing with the fallout today. Here we are two years later, in the midst of another warning from the FDA about elevated levels of lead in the pervasive fall seasoning, and we may want to consider crowning another spice as the “it” flavor of the season.

    FDA Expands Ongoing Cinnamon Recall

According to the Food and Drug Administration, an ongoing cinnamon recall has recently been expanded to include an additional brand that was found to contain elevated levels of lead. Jiva Organics Cinnamon Powder, sold at Taj Supermarket in Sacramento, was added to the growing list of brands after state testing revealed heightened levels of lead contamination in their product. The affected product has a lot code AF-CINP/822 and a best-by date of July 2025. In addition to this specific brand, the ongoing list includes:

Jiva Organics (Sold at Taj Supermarket) Super Brand (Sold at Asian Supermarket in Little Rock, AR) Asli (Sold at A&Y Global Market in Columbia, MO) El Chilar (Sold at El Torito Market) Marcum (Sold at Save-A-Lot Food Stores in Missouri and Virginia) SWAD (Sold at Patel Brothers) Supreme Tradition (Sold at Dollar Tree) Compania Indillor Orientale (Sold at Eurogrocery) ALB Flavor (Sold at Eurogrocery) Shahzada (Sold at Premium Supermarket) Spice Class (Sold at Fish World) La Frontera (Sold at Frutas Y Abbarrotes Mexico, Inc.)

You can find the full list, as well as lot codes and lead concentration, on the FDA’s website. It’s worth it to note that the ongoing recall primarily applies to pre-ground cinnamon, so whole sticks are likely safe to use, but you should still proceed with caution to avoid exposure. If you have any of the contaminated product, it’s recommended that you dispose of it immediately and check with your healthcare provider to ensure you aren’t affected.

On the bright side, this could be our excuse to finally buy that pricey spice grinder we’ve been eyeing. Gotta look for the silver lining. You know?
