A 95-year-old woman was arrested and charged with murder after using part of a wheelchair to bludgeon a fellow resident at a Brooklyn, New York, senior housing facility to death, police said.
In addition to murder, Galina Smirnova was charged Tuesday with weapon possession, police said, for the death of 89-year-old Nina Kravtsov at the Seagate Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Coney Island on Sunday.
Smirnova was arraigned Wednesday and remanded. Prosecutors had asked for a mental health examination, which her lawyer opposed.
Police sources said Kravtsov was killed after she got into an argument with Smirnova. The elderly victim was struck repeatedly over the head with a metal piece of the chair allegedly by Smirnova, who sources said may have dementia.
Medics arrived and took Kravtsov to Lutheran Hospital, where she later died.
Authorities close to the investigation said Smirnova had not been facing charges due to her cognitive condition, but that seemingly changed Tuesday.
