‘Don’t want to see him fight anymore’ – Shakur Stevenson urges Terence Crawford to retire

Shakur Stevenson insists Terence Crawford has accomplished more than enough to retire now and should end his career at the very top.

Over the weekend Crawford claimed the 42nd win of his career, as he beat Canelo Alvarez in the ‘fight of the century’ for the undisputed super middleweight crown.

While extending his unbeaten record, Crawford also became the first male three-weight undisputed champion of the four-belt era following his success at both super lightweight and welterweight.

As attention turned quickly to what the Nebraska native’s next move will be, the boxing fraternity began to share their views on the matter.

The reigning WBC lightweight champion, Stevenson, who was ringside for Crawford’s last outing, has since revealed he thinks his friend should hang up his gloves.

On The Ariel Helwani Show, Stevenson explained: “I don’t want to see him fight anymore, in my opinion.

“It’s just a lot, the training camps and wear and tear on your body. Me being his brother, I really have endless love for this guy. I don’t want to see it.

“I think he did everything in the sport that he could do, I think there is nothing else that could be done.

“He made one of the best fighters of our generation look average. I think that is a huge accomplishment and I think it’s time to retire on a high horse.”

When Helwani posed the question of whether or not he thinks ‘Bud’ will actually retire, despite being close friends, Stevenson seemed to be as unsure as the rest of us.

He shared: “No, but it’s hard to say, Bud is crazy. I already know what he can do in the boxing ring is different and in his training camps the hard work that he puts in comes together on fight night.

“He can go and do different things, he doesn’t have to retire. But for me, I want to see it.”

Should he stay active, Crawford is certainly only one of the hottest targets for potential opponents.

As well as the occupant of the No.1 spot on the Ring Magazine pound-for-pound rankings, dethroning yet another boxing great as Oleksandr Usyk moves down into second place.

What’s likely to be the next move for Crawford?

After Turki Alalshikh revealed a conversation they had prior to his superfight with Canelo, ‘Bud’ was anticipated to retire.

Although, the new king of the super-middleweight division has since hinted at taking on the middleweight division.

The idea of Crawford making an appearance at 160lbs doesn’t seem that far-fetched if you take his illustrious career into consideration.

Especially as he joined an elite club of five-weight world champions after moving up two divisions to challenge Canelo.

While his next move is unknown, the 37-year-old has made it quite clear that he will not be entertaining a crossover bout with UFC lightweight champion, Ilia Topuria.
