CUBS LINEUP — I’m not particularly excited to watch the Cubs face Paul Skenes for the bajillionth time (they’ve seen Skenes the most of any team since his debut), but at least it’s a great matchup vs Cade Horton. And, hey, what if PCA hits his critical and record-setting 30th homer off Skenes? And what if it all adds up to the first Cubs playoff clinch in a normal season since 2018!? They’ll require some outside help to make that happen, but it’s possible!

Chicago Cubs: Cade Horton, RHP
Even though he was on a pitch count his last time out (and likely will be again tonight), Cade Horton was able to toss 6.1 innings of one-run ball against the Braves in Atlanta. That said, Craig Counsell did let him get up to 87 pitches, which I’m taking as a good sign that Horton feels good and is tracking well for October. Still wouldn’t be against limiting him to roughly 75 pitches until then. Just sayin’.
Pittsburgh Pirates: Paul Skenes, RHP

That is to say, he’s allowed a grand total of just 3ER over his last five starts, averaging 6.0 IP per outing while handling good teams like the Blue Jays, Red Sox, and Dodgers in the process. He’s also struck out 37 while walking only 3 during that stretch. So, yeah, still a stud. This is one of those nights when a small offensive output will be understandable.
