California high school state qualifier Elise Qiu has announced her verbal commitment to swim and study at the University of Chicago beginning in the fall of 2027. She publicized the news on SwimCloud, writing:
I am SO excited to announce my verbal commitment to the admissions process at the University of Chicago! I would first like to thank my family and friends for their encouragement and endless support throughout this journey. A special thank you to my big sister who has always been my biggest role model and inspiration. Next, I want to thank all of my coaches and teammates at Burlingame Aquatics who have helped shape me into the person and athlete I am today. Lastly, I would like to thank Coach Jason for giving me this incredible opportunity. Go Maroons!
A rising senior at El Camino High School in South San Francisco, California, Qiu has been a member of her school’s varsity swimming team since her freshman year. She also trains year-round with Burlingame Aquatics, where she primarily specializes in sprint freestyle and IM.
Qiu is coming off a 2025-26 season that saw her drop nearly three seconds in the 200 IM and just under a half second in the 50 and 100 free; she owns a lifetime best of 1:53.91 in the 200 free from April 2025, and she clocked a season-best of 1:54.46 in 2025-26.
On the high school scene, Qiu qualified for and competed at the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) State Championships for the first time this May, where she placed 24th in the 200 IM (2:05.34). She’d placed third in the event (2:03.87) at Sectionals, in addition to seventh in an off event, the 100 breast (1:05.10). All of her other current PBs were set at club meets earlier in the season: she clocked 53.16 in the 100 free at the PC SSF October Splash Meet in October, and 24.64 in the 50 free at the Holiday Swim Festival in December.

At the UAA Championships last season, the Maroons took third behind Emory and NYU before sending 12 athletes on to compete at the NCAA Division III Championship, where the team finished seventh overall.
Qiu is slated to make an immediate impact at the conference and national level, despite having two full seasons of training to go before arriving on campus. Her career best in the 200 IM would have won bronze at the 2026 conference meet, while her lifetime best in the 200 free would have qualified for the ‘B’ final. At the national level, her 200 IM PB would also make the ‘A’ final and finish seventh at the NCAA Division III Championships, though her times in the 100/200 free fall short of the 51.13/1:51.81 cutoffs needed to qualify for that meet.
Qiu joins Barbara Liao and Sofia Torres in committing to Chicago’s class of 2031 so far.
