Terence Crawford says he wasn’t familiar with Ilia Topuria prior to being called out by him.
Crawford is coming off an incredible unanimous decision win against Canelo Alvarez on September 13.
As the winner of the ‘fight of the century’ and 42-0, Crawford is unsurprisingly one of the hottest targets for potential challengers.
One man that is confident that he could not only hand Crawford his first defeat, but also knock him out, is Topuria.
Topuria is undeniably one of the biggest UFC stars at the moment, with an impressive 17-0 record across his mixed martial arts promotions.
Earlier in September, the UFC lightweight champion boldly predicted that, should their paths cross, he would beat the Crawford in both the Octagon and the boxing ring.
Speaking on The Ariel Helwani Show, Crawford has clarified his position on a potential crossover fight with ‘El Matador’.
He said: “I’m not worried about that guy at all. To be honest, I’ve never even seen this dude fight. I didn’t even know who he was.”
Crawford recalled meeting Topuria for the first time and sharing a brief interaction with him, before later seeing the brazen call-out being made online.
He continued: “I definitely think he’s trying to clout-chase. I think he would definitely get in the ring with me for the right cheque. That’s what we all do it for.
“But at the same time, I don’t know what the f*** he’s doing.”
Helwani asked him if he would consider a fight for the right amount of money.
GettyCrawford became the first male three-weight undisputed champion of the four-belt era as he defeated Canelo this weekend[/caption]After floating the paydays earned by Floyd Mayweather Jr and Conor McGregor when they fought in 2017, Crawford seemed offended that Topuria was being likened to McGregor.
He said: “[Topuria is] nowhere near on the level of Conor McGregor. Let’s be real. Stop it. Don’t ever compare him to Conor….
“I don’t know this guy. I’ve never seen this guy fight and I watch a lot of MMA…
“Maybe he’s a good fighter. I don’t know, but I honestly never seen this guy fight for sure. I’ve seen Conor McGregor fight a lot of times.”
While it seemed unlikely that a bout between the two champions would ever get over the line, Crawford clearly has no intention on pursuing it regardless.
“Tell that guy to keep up the good work in his career. I wish him the best,” Crawford concluded.
Topuria won his second UFC title in June by knocking out Charles OliveiraGettyWhat’s next for Terence Crawford?
After his success against Canelo, the American became the newest member of an elite group of five-weight world champions.
In the latest Ring Magazine pound-for-pound rankings he has also now claimed the No.1 spot and knocked Oleksandr Usyk down to No.2.
The 37-year-old has dominated the boxing scene, after an impressive reign over both super lightweight and welterweight divisions.
While it was anticipated that Crawford was looking to retire after facing Canelo, he teased a new plan in the post-fight press conference.
Meaning that should he choose to stay active, we could see the legend make an appearance at 160lbs.
