Israel Adesanya has placed Terence Crawford among the best boxers in the sport’s history after his win over Canelo Alvarez.
Crawford outboxed Alvarez in Las Vegas on Saturday night to earn a unanimous decision win and become the new undisputed champion at super-middleweight.
In doing so, the 37-year-old from Nebraska became the first male boxer to be crowned undisputed champion across three weight classes, while also joining the likes of Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao among pugilists who have won world titles in five or more divisions.
Crawford’s victory placed him side by side with the likes of Oleksandr Usyk and Naoya Inoue as the greatest pound-for-pound boxers in the world right now.
And former UFC middleweight champion Adesanya believes Crawford has gone a step further as ‘one of the best’ in history.
‘One of the best’
“Most people don’t know s*** about boxing, but Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford does,” Adesanya explained on his YouTube channel in his reaction to Crawford’s triumph over Alvarez.
“Great fight, and just what I assumed would happen: boxing smart would beat Canelo’s tactics.
“From round two, I saw Canelo on the back foot, and Crawford was just dancing around him.
“I like Crawford – the way he fights is clean. He makes very little mistakes, and he knows the sweet science of boxing.
“He showed why he’s the best right now, one of the best in history.”
Adesanya eyeing UFC return in worst form of career
Adesanya is currently preparing for a UFC return on a three-fight losing skid, which has never happened before in his MMA career.
‘The Last Stylebender’ lost the middleweight title to Sean Strickland in a shocking defeat at UFC 293 in September 2023, and has since failed to bounce back.
Adesanya views Crawford as one of the best pugilists in sport’s historyGetty The former UFC champion hasn’t fought since being finished by Nassourdine Imavov in FebruaryGETTYAfter almost a year out of competition, the Nigerian-born New Zealander was submitted by Dricus du Plessis at UFC 305, before contesting his first non-title fight in six years in February.
Adesanya was matched up against Nassourdine Imavov, expecting to get back to winning ways against the Frenchman.
But just 30 seconds into round two of their UFC Saudi Arabia main event, Adesanya was stopped by Imavov after a ferocious right hand, and the former champion hasn’t fought since.
After training with David Goggins ahead of his UFC return, Adesanya has insisted that he will fight before the end of the year, with a Strickland rematch one fight he wants to get back down the line.
Strickland is the No. 3-ranked UFC middleweight behind Imavov, Du Plesis and Khamzat Chimaev, who won the division’s title at UFC 319 last month.
Paulo Costa is the current frontrunner to be Adesanya’s next opponent, with reports suggesting the pair will face off at UFC Abu Dhabi on October 25, where Tom Aspinall makes his first heavyweight title defence.
