Manchester City 3-0 Manchester United Stats: Foden & Haaland Double Act Continues to Produce Derby Delight

Manchester City enjoyed a derby victory over rivals Manchester United thanks to the familiar duo of Erling Haland and Phil Foden at the Etihad Stadium.

Manchester City returned to Premier League action with a comfortable derby win over Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium, with Erling Haaland and Phil Foden once again doing the damage against their rivals.

Fifteen of the last 17 Premier League goals scored by City against United in the Manchester derby have been scored by either Haaland (8) or Foden (7) as the duo kept up their sensational record in the fixture.

Since 2022-23, Haaland’s first season at City, this was the 12th time that both he and Foden have scored in the same Premier League game for Manchester City, and four of those have come in matches versus Man Utd.

Both rivals had hardly started the season in convincing fashion, having collected one win in three league games before the international break.

Gianluigi Donnarumma was selected in goal for Man City, becoming the first player to make his Premier League debut for the club in a Manchester derby since Claudio Bravo and Leroy Sane in September 2016.

Twenty-six-year-old Donnarumma may have been making his first start in English football, but the Italian goalkeeper was one of the most experienced players in either starting XI.

In fact, this was the first time both City (25y 224d) and United (25y 141d) named a starting lineup with an average of 25 years or younger in the derby since October 2011, when the Citizens famously won 6-1 at Old Trafford.

After a fast-paced start, which saw Haaland only inches away from scoring after just 17 seconds, it only took 18 minutes for Foden opened the scoring.

The 25-year-old headed in Jérémy Doku cross to score his seventh Premier League goal against Manchester United across his career.

The first half failed to produce much more of substance, with only five shots attempted overall by the two sides combined. That tally was the lowest across the first half of a Manchester derby in the league since October 2015 (4).

The first shot of the second half came seven minutes after the restart, and Haaland made it count.

Racing on to Doku’s pass inside the Man Utd penalty area, the Norwegian lifted the ball over Altay Bayindir to double City’s advantage. It was Doku’s second assist of the game and his 15th for Man City in the Premier League – more than any other player at the club in the competition since his debut in September 2023.

Donnarumma proved his worth with an excellent save from Bryan Mbeumo on the hour-mark, after the Cameroonian hit a rasping volley at goal before the Italian expertly diverted the ball past the post with a strong hand.

Haaland added a second goal, and City’s third, in the 69th minute, with United’s defence all at sea.

Harry Maguire lost the ball inside the City half before Bernardo Silva sent the striker clear from the halfway line. Haaland made no mistake, slotting the ball past Bayindir to score his eighth Manchester derby goal in the Premier League, equalling Wayne Rooney and Sergio Agüero’s records in the match within the competition.

That goal was the 1,500th scored by a side led by Pep Guardiola in top-flight league football, in what was the Spaniard’s 600th top-flight league game as a manager (W446 D85 L69).

Following this latest defeat for United, it means that they have collected just 31 points in 31 Premier League games under Ruben Amorim. Since the matchday of Amorim’s first match in charge on 24 November, no ever-present Premier League team have won fewer points (Tottenham have also won 31 from 31).

Manchester City 3-0 Manchester United Post-Match Stats

Erling Haaland scored his 50th goal in his 50th home Premier League game for Manchester City. In the competition’s history, only Alan Shearer required fewer home appearances to hit 50 home goals (47). With just four points from four games (W1 D1 L2), this is Manchester United’s poorest start to a league season since 1992-93, when they also had four points from their opening four matches under Alex Ferguson. Manchester United have picked up just 14 points in 16 away games in the Premier League under Ruben Amorim (W3 D5 L8); since his first game in charge in November last season, this is the fewest away points of any ever-present side in the competition. This was Man City boss Pep Guardiola’s 10th Premier League Manchester derby win, making him only the third manager for either City or United to win 10+ league derbies, after Alex Ferguson (20) and Matt Busby (15). In 2025, no side has won more Premier League home games than Manchester City (9, level with Chelsea and Liverpool), with the Citizens winning six of their last seven league games at the Etihad Stadium (L1). Ruben Amorim’s Premier League win rate stands at 26% (8/31). Among managers to take charge of 20+ games with Manchester United in the top-flight, only Alfred Albut (20%) and Scott Duncan (24%) have a lower win ratio at this level with the club. This was Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola’s 600th top-flight match as a manager, while his sides have scored 1,501 goals in those games, an average of just over 2.5 per game.
