The i Paper’s four British Journalism Awards nominations – including scoop of the year

The i Paper is shortlisted in several categories at the upcoming British Journalism Awards 2026, it has been announced.

The shortlist for the annual awards, held to celebrate public-interest journalism with a real-world impact, was produced by 73 independent judges whittling down a total of 695 entries.

The i Paper has received nominations in four categories, including Campaign of the Year and Scoop of the Year.

The Killer Kitchens campaign has shone a light on the scandal of kitchen revamp workers falling ill and dying from silicosis after inhaling dust while cutting quartz kitchen worktops. Spearheaded by the years-long work of senior reporter Joe Duggan, the campaign has forced new safety regulations to be introduced by the Government.

Its inclusion on the shortlist for Campaign of the Year follows a string of other nominations, including for the News Media Association’s (NMA) “Making a Difference” award.

Among the six contenders for Scoop of the Year is the revelation by The i Paper‘s chief political commentator Kitty Donaldson earlier this year that Peter Mandelson’s security vetting as US ambassador was fast-tracked despite his known links to Jeffrey Epstein, edited by Deputy Head of News and Head of Politics Hatty Collier.

Two of The i Paper‘s journalists have also received individual nominations in recognition of their work.

Chief football writer Daniel Storey is a candidate for Sports Journalist of the Year for the second year in a row.

The judges highlighted three of Storey’s standout features including “101 things I learned by driving 7,835 miles across Trump’s America“, which marked the culmination of his On The Road odyssey across the United States during this summer’s Fifa World Cup.

This followed other On The Road stories told during the 2025/26 club football season, including “I played in the world’s smallest – and most magical – football league“, which saw Storey take to the pitch for the season opener between the two teams that call the Isles of Scilly home, and “Exeter City and the dying dream of English football“, which highlighted the plight of Exeter City, one of only two majority fan-owned clubs in the Football League.

In the running for New Journalist of the Year is The i Paper‘s live blogs reporter Kyriakos Petrakos, whose exclusive work stretches far beyond covering the day’s biggest news and events.

Among his selected stories was “Inside Ukraine’s bunker schools that shield children from Putin’s bombs“, for which Petrakos visited a school in Kyiv to investigate how schoolchildren and staff have learned to cope with the escalation of drone and missile barrages from Russia.

In another exclusive, Petrakos revealed that Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor appeared to have sent a second batch of documents linked to his UK trade envoy work to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.

And through Freedom of Information requests, he also revealed that almost 350 unaccompanied child asylum seekers have gone missing from Home Office and council accommodation in the last six years.

The shortlist for News Provider of the Year will be published at a later date while winners for the Public Service Journalism Award, Marie Colvin Award and Journalist of the Year will be announced on the night of the gala dinner, scheduled to be held at London’s Hilton Bankside on Thursday 10 December.

It comes after The i Paper‘s environment correspondent, Lucie Heath, won the British Journalism Award for Environment and Energy Reporting at last year’s ceremony.
