South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers took a tough hit to the head from Vanderbilt linebacker Langston Patterson on Saturday night, and it caused him to leave the game late in the second quarter.
On Sunday morning, On3’s Pete Nakos confirmed that Sellers suffered a concussion on the hit, which was later ruled a targeting foul and saw Patterson ejected.
During his halftime interview, head coach Shane Beamer was initially dismayed at how long it took the replay officials to review the play for targeting,
“I asked him as soon as it happened if [they were] looking at it for targeting,” Beamer said. “For our quarterback to be lying there on the ground like that, he probably got hit in the head. And then, for whatever reason, it took them a while to buzz down.
“So, I don’t know what’s going on in Birmingham or wherever they look at it, but I thought it was pretty obvious.”
Before exiting the 31-7 loss, Sellers had completed 6-of-7 passes for 94 yards and an interception. Sixth-year senior Luke Doty stepped into the game before halftime, and he finished with 148 yards passing on 18-of-27 completions to go along with 20 rushing yards. Doty did turn the ball over twice, once via a fumble and the other time from an interception.
Sellers’ status for the Gamecocks’ upcoming road trip to face unbeaten Missouri is currently up in the air, with Doty expected to be the signal-caller if the sophomore quarterback is unable to give it a go. South Carolina will closely monitor Sellers’ status over the next 48 hours.
