Diego Lopes and Jean Silva put on a Fight of the Year contender in the main event of Noche UFC on Saturday night.
Lopes, 30, finished the bout with one of the most audacious spinning back elbows in the second round to taste victory on the Mexican Independence Day card at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Texas.
The Brazilian-born Mexican fighter utilised his superior grappling skills to control No. 10-ranked UFC featherweight Silva for more than half of round one.
During that time, Lopes cut Silva up with some nasty 12-6 elbows that left ‘Lord’ in deep trouble for the first time in his UFC career.
Silva survived and came out swinging in round two, looking to extend his six-fight undefeated UFC record by catching Lopes straight up the middle.
The 28-year-old from the esteemed Fighting Nerds MMA gym in Brazil had success and put Lopes on red alert with several well-timed combinations that sent his opponent backing up to the cage.
Then, out of nowhere, as Silva smelt blood and hunted down his opponent, he was on the receiving end of a sickening spinning back elbow that split him instantly open.
Lopes had turned inside and rotated his elbow with full force towards Silva’s head, nicking the top of his opponent’s skull and sending him crashing to the canvas.
Blood began pouring from Silva’s head as Lopes pounced and unleashed lethal ground and pound.
After about eight seconds of unanswered hammering, referee Mike Beltran had no choice but to stop the fight.

He made a whopping $100,000 in bonuses by defeating Lopes for the Fight of the Night and Performance of the Night.
The 30-year-old knew he needed a victory in San Antonio to cement himself as the second-best featherweight behind Alexander Volkanovski, who defeated Lopes to win the vacant belt in April.
Volkanovski is yet to make the first defence of his second 145lbs title reign, but is expected to face Manchester’s Lerone Murphy before the end of the year.
Noche UFC was the promotion’s third commemorative card of Mexico’s Independence Day.
The card also witnessed David Martinez defeat Rob Font via unanimous decision, while Rafa Garcia, Jared Gordon and Kelvin Gastelum all claimed victories.
