The Cubs had the chance to make it a really, really perfect Saturday. Anthony Rizzo was in the house for his special day, celebrating out in the bleachers, and literally getting hit by Moises Ballesteros’s first career home run. The game was back and forth, tight late, and the Cubs had the tying run on third and the winning run on first, with nobody out.
But Matt Shaw grounded into a fielder’s choice with Dansby Swanson cut down at home. Michael Busch struck out. Ian Happ struck out. Terrible ending to a great day.
Although he gave up the decisive homer in the 9th, I’m not gonna say a bad word about Brad Keller. When that’s the first run you’ve given up in two months, you’ve earned a whole lot of grace for hanging a pitch.
The other late homer came off of Porter Hodge, but it was Junior Caminero, who has done it 42 other times this season. So, you know. It happens.
As for the Ankin Law “Making It Personal” Player of the Game, it has to be Anthony Rizzo, despite the loss and despite his drop in the bleachers. Still had a heckuva game.
