Banner Health hires new neurosurgeon for Greeley hospital

GREELEY — Banner Health is expanding its neurosurgery program by hiring neurosurgeon Sam Haider to work at Banner North Colorado Medical Center.

Haider has advanced training in spine and brain surgery and specializes in minimally invasive procedures that use incisions smaller than one inch, according to a press release announcing his hire. He most recently completed residency training at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, a Level 1 trauma center. Using minimally invasive techniques can often shorten recovery time, Haider said in the press release.

“We are not overly aggressive with surgical recommendations; we try to fix the problem in a way that doesn’t compound future problems,” Haider said in the release.

The expanded neurosurgery program at the medical center at 1801 16th St. serves patients from across Northern Colorado, Southern Wyoming and Western Nebraska, the release said.

Haider joins neurosurgeons William McKay, who specializes in complex spinal procedures; and Jacob Bernstein, who focuses on general neurosurgery and spine care; at the Banner North Colorado Medical Center.

The focus on neurosurgery services at Banner North Colorado Medical Center comes as Banner Health re-aligns some services in Northern Colorado. The company said recently that it would cut 351 jobs at Loveland’s McKee Medical Center and cease emergency services there Nov. 5.

McKee Medical Center will transition to a specialty hospital called Banner North Colorado Medical Center — Loveland that’s anchored by the Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Banner Health officials also have said they would close the freestanding Greeley emergency department and Banner Urgent Care in Greeley on the same date.

The hospital system this spring acquired seven Village Medical clinics in the region, weeks after dozens of providers left Village Medical for UCHealth. With the acquisition, Banner absorbed primary care and walk-in clinics in Fort Collins, Longmont, Loveland and Windsor, bringing 46 providers to Banner Medical Group, Banner Health’s employed provider group.

Banner North Colorado Medical Center is an accredited, private, nonprofit facility. It offers emergency care, cancer care, heart care, orthopedics, inpatient and outpatient surgery, obstetrics, pediatrics, rehabilitation, intensive care, lab and medical imaging and medical air transport.

Banner Health is a nonprofit health care system with 33 hospitals in six states.
