Swim of the Week is brought to you by arena, a SwimSwam partner.

Disclaimer: Swim of the Week is not meant to be a conclusive selection of the best overall swim of the week, but rather one Featured Swim to be explored in deeper detail. The Swim of the Week is an opportunity to take a closer look at the context of one of the many fast swims this week, perhaps a swim that slipped through the cracks as others grabbed the headlines, or a race we didn’t get to examine as closely in the flood of weekly meets.

Melbourne Swimming Club’s Felix Dressel-de Bruyn dropped a blistering swim in the 50 freestyle on Friday during the opening night of competition at the Victorian Age SC Championships.

Dressel-de Bruyn, 18, put up a time of 21.99 to shatter the Victorian Age Group Record for 17-18 boys of 22.20, set by Toby McOmish in 2023.

Dressel-de Bruyn’s previous best time stood at 22.34, set at the Tri-Series Tour meet in Ballarat in July, and he had narrowly missed that with a 22.35 clocking in the prelims.

Last year, he was the runner-up in the 50 free in a time of 22.87, placing 2nd to Caulfield Aquatics’ Campbell Wilson-Moran (22.74), who placed 3rd on Friday in 22.43.

In the all-time Australian rankings for 18-year-old boys, Dressel-de Bruyn narrowly misses out on cracking the top 10, with Jack Cartwright holding down 10th spot with a time of 21.91.

Earlier in the session, Dressel-de Bruyn defended his Victorian title in the 200 IM, knocking two seconds off his personal best time set last year in 2:00.09.

As evidenced by his success in the 200 IM, Dressel-de Bruyn is an all-around talent. He won medals in the 100 breast (1:03.42), 200 breast (2:16.68) and 50 fly (24.72) at the Australian Age Group Championships earlier this year in the long course pool, where he also placed 6th in the 50 free in a personal best time of 23.35.

There were a number of other Victorian Age Group Records set on Friday:
