Alabama football prepares for a battle with Wisconsin at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The two squads are familiar with each other after playing last year in Madison, where the Crimson Tide prevailed 42-10 in blowout fashion.
This year, however, two very different teams will face off. Both programs have new starting quarterbacks who are looking to prove themselves against Power Four competition.
For Alabama, the focus is on getting back on track after a season-opening loss to Florida State and building on its blowout win over Louisiana-Monroe. The Crimson Tide is still searching for its offensive identity under first-year offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb.
Grubb is reshaping Alabama’s offense into a more pass-centric, pro-style attack. It marks a major change from last year’s scheme with Jalen Milroe at quarterback, which featured a variety of designed runs.
“Jalen was a super talented runner. That was probably a part of the game plan every week, which was smart last year by the offensive staff, so I think that’s probably the biggest difference,” Grubb said.
This season, Grubb wants to establish the passing game with quarterback Ty Simpson, and he has confidence in his offensive line to protect the quarterback.
“Honestly, I’m really excited about the way the O-line is playing, the physicality they have been showing and the leadership that Parker Brailsford has been able to have,” Grubb said.
Alabama hopes to have all facets of its offense on display against a Wisconsin team that it had little trouble scoring against last year.
Wisconsin enters the matchup 2-0 but has yet to face a Power Four opponent. Alabama will provide the Badgers their first major test of the season.
Head coach Luke Fickell said his offense must be physical up front while also creating explosive plays.
“It’s not completely old-school, but I think the idea of being more multiple and truly understanding what physicality-first looks like is where we came to,” Fickell said.
The Badgers, like Alabama, are adjusting to a new offensive coordinator in Jeff Grimes. Through two games, they have averaged 159 rushing yards per game, a major point of emphasis in the offseason.
Fickell has been looking to alter the Badgers’ identity on offense. He has hopes of bringing Wisconsin back to its hard run game approach that it has been known for in the past. Alabama’s run defense gave up 230 yards to Florida State in its first game of the year. This could be a major factor to look out for to see who will control the line of scrimmage.
Both Alabama and Wisconsin will look to boost their resumes Saturday in a battle in Tuscaloosa.
