Crews battle fire at Mosque on North Goodman Street Wednesday morning

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – An active Mosque on North Goodman Street in Rochester caught fire Wednesday morning.

The fire occurred at around 8 a.m. Crews were seen battling the two-alarm fire, with heavy smoke visible in the area, putting it out in about 30 minutes.

The Rochester Fire Department reported that flames were present on both floors of the building. Lt. Jackie Sierra said the high-traffic area posed a significant challenge.

“Our biggest concern was we had to call the Rochester Police Department to stop traffic because of the heavy traffic in the area — that did pose a challenge for us,” said Sierra.

Sierra says they originally thought the building was vacant, but later found out it wasn’t. She says nobody was in the building at the time of the call and there was “moderate damage,” to the building.

Two firefighters were medically evaluated, but no other injuries were reported.

An off-duty firefighter spotted the smoke and reported the fire. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
