Two Lake County men were arrested in Covelo with illegal weapons in their vehicle, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office reported.
According to the MCSO, a deputy patrolling the Covelo area of northern Mendocino County stopped a vehicle in the 76000 block of Highway 162 around 8:40 p.m. Sept. 5 because the vehicle reportedly had an inoperable headlight.
While contacting the two occupants of the vehicle, identified as Cornelio Solorio, 24, and Fernando Solorio, 30, both of Clearlake, the deputy reported that Fernando was driving, and that there was “an open container of alcohol within the passenger compartment of the vehicle.”
After it was determined that Fernando Solorio had a suspended driver’s license and that he was on DMV Probation, the MCSO reports that a search of the vehicle revealed “an unloaded handgun and a loaded rifle within the passenger compartment of the vehicle. Both firearms were within the immediate area of the occupants. Based on the unique features of the rifle it met the statutory requirements listed in 30515 PC, making it a violation of 30605 PC – Possession of an assault weapon.”
Cornelio Solorio was ultimately arrested on suspicion of possessing a concealed firearm in a vehicle, carrying a loaded firearm in a vehicle and possession of an assault weapon, and Fernando Solorio was arrested on suspicion of possessing a concealed firearm in a vehicle, carrying a loaded firearm in a vehicle, possession of an assault weapon and possession of an un-serialized firearm, as well as violating his probation and driving on a suspended license.
Both men were booked into Mendocino County Jail and held under $15,000 bail.
